7 events not to be missed across Germany in May 2020

1. Green Sauce Festival, Frankfurt (May 12th — May 19th)

For over ten years, dozens of Hessian restaurateurs have been coming together for this annual festival, each of them vying for first place in the green sauce competition.

Green sauce is a culinary creation that hails from Frankfurt. It contains seven herbs: parsley, cress, chives, sorrel, borage, pimpinella and chervil. The herbs are then mixed with quark and traditionally served with potatoes and boiled eggs.

During the week the festival is on, visitors can sample the chefs’ green sauces and vote on their favourite. The chefs battle it out to the final round and visitor votes determine who wins the competition.

In addition to live music, cabaret performers and musicians, a daily market will also be running throughout the event serving up dishes which incorporate green sauce in some way. Everything from Argentinean steaks to Sicilians rice balls will be on offer.

2. Dresden Music Festival, Dresden (May 10th — June 10th)

Bidding to be named European “Capital of Culture” in 2025, the capital city of Saxony is keen to attract visitors to its 41st annual Music Festival, which runs for a month starting on May 10th.

At 22 venues in the city’s historic centre, 1,500 artists from across the world — including renowned orchestras, soloists and ensembles — will showcase their talent. “Mirrors” is the theme of the 2020 Dresden Music Festival, which according to the mayor of Dresden, Dirk Hilbert, alludes to the dimension of human culture.

The theme of reflections also points to the historical references which transport works of the great composers of the past into our world today, says Hilbert.

3. Rhine in Flames, Rhine River banks from Bonn to Linz (May 4th — May 6th)

In a tradition which dates back to 1756, the banks of the Rhine River from Bonn to the municipality of Linz will once again be lit up by fireworks during the first weekend in May in a spectacular show of colour and lights.

Spectators have the choice to either gather in the Rheinaue leisure park in Bonn or enjoy the view while floating down the river towards the former capital in an illuminated boat.

From 9:35pm, six large firework displays will be set off on May 5th. Though you’ll have to stay up if you really want to be impressed; the final firework show due to kick off at 11:15pm is meant to be a highlight in that it will be synchronized to music from five continents.

The event is the first in a series along the Rhine between May and September.

4. re:publica, Berlin (May 2nd — May 4th)

Concerned about digitalization and how it will affect society in Europe? Head to re:publica in the nation’s capital in the first week of of May, where you can ponder ideas having to do with digital civil rights, digital policy and the fight for a free, open internet.

What originally started as a meeting of bloggers in 2007 has grown to become a conference of activists, scientists, hackers, journalists, and entrepreneurs among others.

The event has also expanded beyond just being a conference providing discussions and workshops. This year for the first time a “Netzfest” — an outdoor event that’s free of charge where visitors can engage with others in talks about all things digital — will be held at Park am Gleisdreick.

A lesser-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm is The Bremen Town Musicians, which follows the antics of a rooster, cat, dog and donkey. You can experience the tale for free through a live performance taking place over the next few months in Bremen.

The event starts in May and ends in September, with performances every Sunday at midday on the Cathedral Square.

Attention, movie buffs! The 33rd Documentary Film Festival takes place in the Bavarian capital in May, featuring films from all over the globe.

Claiming to be one of Europe’s largest documentary film festivals, the festival states on its website that it aims to “support directors from so-called ‘low produc­tion countries’, work on impacting artistic documentary films and initiate sustainable relationships between established filmmakers and newcomers.”

At theatres in the centre of Munich during the week-and-a-half-long festival you will have your choice of German films and African films with everything else in between.

Starting from the last weekend of May and stretching into early June, this festival is based in a south German city where wine has been grown for over 1,000 years. You’ll be able to try over 100 different wines at the Weindorf (wine village) in the heart of Würzburg’s market square.

5 Employee Engagement Predictions for 2020

Employee engagement is critical to retention. Don’t believe us? The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median period people stay in their jobs is just over four years. And for those age 25 to 34 it’s even less (2.8 years). Broaden this to all millennials, and you’ve got a group that’s even more on the move — a scary prospect given they make up roughly a third of today’s U.S. workforce. So what’s a company to do? Read on for 5 employee engagement predictions — and they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

1. Employee Engagement Deniers, Seek Help Now

The biggest prediction for employee engagement in 2020? Adoption is not an option; it’s a necessity. If you don’t have already have an employee engagement strategy, get one. Even Fortune 500s compete with the gig economy, which trades the traditional work perks of a guaranteed salary and benefits for freedom, flexibility and creativity. Make sure your engagement strategy reflects those desires.

Not only must you have a strategy, you have to be ready to deploy it in as many ways as possible and as early as possible. Passing the drug test shouldn’t be the top onboard “win” for your new hire. Look into attractive benefits plans, flexible work hours or locations, gamification software, or learning opportunities that you can present during the interview process. And remember: today’s employee knows far more about you than you know about them when they walk in the door.

2. Your Employee is Your Customer

Forbes writer Denise Lee Yohn has dubbed 2020 The Year of Employee Experience (EX). This concept transcends traditional employee engagement (better HR, perks and swag, employee as customer, integrated communications) and encompasses “everything the employee experiences throughout his or her connection to the organization.” Consider who your employee is outside your building. Yohn cites compelling research that EX grows corporate stature and profits. We’re not saying to ignore the basics, but nobody buys the house for the foundation. And don’t be surprised if you start seeing “CEXO” — Chief Employee Experience Officer — creep into the C-suite.

3. Make Work Less Work

Before we get to the sexy stuff (integrated platforms!), let’s talk about some employee engagement basics: how people get their daily work done. In a 2020 Oracle Global Engagement study, only 44% of employees felt their companies used the latest technology to support their work. Are you making things easier or harder for your employees? And are you looking beyond the ubiquitous Microsoft Office suite (please)?

Today’s tools (e.g., Slack, Basecamp, Quickbase) feel more collaborative because they are. It’s not about a single person getting their work done, anymore. It’s about teams getting better work done together. But don’t forget to plan for change management. The best tech tools are worthless if they’re not adopted. It’s critical for you to answer “What’s in it for me?” for each employee. Desire is a powerful CPU.

4. Integrate, Analyze, Improve, Repeat

Whether you’re just now designing your employee engagement platform or fine-tuning it, you’ve got to think holistically and create an experience that supports your employees’ entire career path — unless you want it to be with another company.

From platforms that manage basic employee reward and retention programs to more sophisticated offerings that integrate social media, gamification, and even budget targets, technology-based employee engagement is on the rise. For example, Achievers offers a robust employee recognition and engagement platform with a full suite of tools to keep HR continuously informed and employees engaged. The more components included in your solution, the richer the data. It’s like having your own personal dashboard of what motivates your workforce.

Stephen Hunt with SAP Human Capital Management Research writes: “We will see exponential growth in the use of artificial intelligence, chatbots, intelligent services, machine learning, mobile solutions, and social platforms to make work more enjoyable, simple, and engaging.” Critical to these platforms is user-friendliness, mobility, and real-time feedback (think Pulse surveys, not the antiquated annual breed). And speaking of employee engagement, you might want to involve your employees and company brand in your platform’s design if you want it to succeed.

5. Wellness Tech Will Rival Work Tech

Collaboration tools: check. Integrated platforms: check. Health tech? Absolutely.

Even in wellness, tech is playing a bigger role in employee engagement. FastCompany reports that BP, Bank of America, IBM, Target, and other big names are putting wearables in their employees’ hands (and on their wrists). In 2020, FitBit launched Group Health, putting its product at the forefront of corporate wellness programs that are increasingly integrating downloadable fitness data into their health incentive tracking dashboards. In 2020, more and more companies will be helping employees get their 10,000 steps — understanding that an active body outside the cube promotes a more active mind inside it.

These are just a few of the ways great companies are thinking about employee engagement in 2020. Remember: you don’t have to be Google and your office park doesn’t have to be a self-sufficient compound to offer an awesome employee engagement experience.

Berlin 24/7: Why Berlin is so dirty

Rotting food, cigarette butts, old furniture: these items litter the streets of Berlin — and reflect the mentality of the inhabitants of the German capital, thinks Gero Schliess. City cleaning efforts are laughable.

Each time when American friends of mine visit me in Berlin, they actually praise the city for its cleanliness. That’s when I start to pity my pals. If they seriously think that Berlin is clean and neat, what on earth do the streets look like in their hometowns in the US?

Berlin’s streets and bridges reek of urine, mountains of trash can be found in our parks. «Accidentally» forgotten debris, food remains in front of fast food restaurants, empty bottles and cigarette stubs in subway and train stations — my dear American friends, that’s how clean the German capital really is. And it’s only the start.

Berlin’s dumpsters overflow onto its streets

But let’s elaborate: «Now official news: Berlin drowning in bulky waste,» the sensationalist newspaper Berliner Zeitung cried a few months ago, lamenting about dirty swine dropping old pieces of furniture and stinking mattresses just about anywhere. Well, yeah, you have to pay for trash removal in Berlin. And Berliners prefer to spend their money on Moscow Mules and other cocktails. Besides, aren’t stained couches and mattresses an expression of Berlin’s notorious nonchalance and sexiness? That much naïveté really gets on my nerves. Hey, Berliners, wake up, and grow up! Live out your pubescent side in the clubs, but please, not on the streets!

No tolerance for trash sinners

Berlin’s bureacrats have zero-tolerance stance towards the perpetrators — at least, they act like they do. Their response to the trash problem is an oh-so very martial catalogue of fines. Whoever is caught for having left behind «mud-like substances,» like excrement, gets away with a paltry €10-35 ($12-43) fine. So-called «insignificant products,» like paper cups, tissues, cigarette packs, ashtray contents, or banana peels only cost you a mere €35. Burying household garbage is even cheaper by €5; you only have to shell out €30 for that.

The Berlin Senate, currently a left-wing constellation of Social Democrats, Greens and the Left, has come up with a rather notable idea to make the penalties better at detering people through fear. From now on, an army of 100 trash sheriffs is to restore law and order in the city when it comes to dirt and illegal waste. The Senate has decided to fund the project with €8.4 million per year over the next two years.

City efforts to punish those who litter have been ineffective

I think that’s a lot of money for trash. Even more so when I consider the pathetic results of a similar, smaller-scale project that took place in the city district of Neukölln, which had much-feared trash sheriffs on patrol last year. They arrested all of 28 trash sinners and dolled out fines totaling a laughable €6,800.

Inceidentally, Neukölln’s former district mayor is Social Democrat Franziska Giffey, who has taken up a ministerial position in Germany’s new grand coalition government amid much positive anticipation. Nevertheless, it comforts me that as family minister she won’t be responsible for waste and its disposal.

A self-cleansing city

Even Berlin’s interior senator, Andreas Geisel, seems to have grasped how dramatic the consequences of not cleaning up Berlin’s trash could turn out to be. Only recently, he spoke out sharply on what he calls «the dilapidation of Berlin’s public space.» In his view, this has become a serious security threat: Mountains of trash can distract attention from punched-in window panes. Should the interior senator therefore provide his forces with brooms and pans instead of with handguns?

What a crazy idea! But in Berlin, one that can’s be ruled out — though it would be no more than just another cosmetic measure.

For now, let’s confront the naked truth head-on. I believe the trash disaster reflects the mentality of the Berliners. Let’s put it clearly: Chances are that the inside of Berliners’ heads resembles the state of the city’s squalid streets.


The Berlin mentality — laidback with delusional dreams of grandeur — may amuse us now and then. But it’s not acceptable for those of us who expect functioning schools, a completed airport and halfway clean streets. If Berlin were a person, I would send it to a therapist. As this is not the case, the only thing I can do is to pin my hopes on Berlin’s self-cleansing abilities, in the most literal sense of the words. So that Berliners’ heads begin to get cleaned up. And so that I won’t feel forced anymore to look the other way whenever American visitors praise the cleanliness of Germany’s capital.

19th Annual European User Group Meeting, Berlin, Germany

We are pleased to announce that the 19th Annual Schrödinger European User Group Meeting will be held September 25th — 27th, 2020 at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, Germany.


During this year’s European User Group Meeting we will jointly explore both concept and components of Schrödinger’s Molecular Design Platform. We will show how our various technologies unite with a project team’s expertise to drive design projects forward and to increase research productivity overall. The meeting will comprise several events: a full day drug-discovery themed workshop, interactive panel discussions, and application-based presentations from users of our software.

Central to the workshop will be a structure-based design story that will draw upon the full spectrum of science and technology within Schrödinger’s Maestro interface and Enterprise Informatics offerings. The narrative will begin with classical ideation, reflecting typical design workflows and the need for free-flowing communication between modelers and chemistry colleagues. Having validated our physics-based methods, we will investigate potential synergies with modern machine-learning techniques to map-out larger regions of chemical space and allow real-world experiments to concentrate on the most promising molecules.

Panel discussions with high-profile industry participants will be on “Molecular Design in 2025” and “Structure-based Modeling using in-silico Structures.” There will be a series of presentations by users of our software and by Schrödinger scientists on recent scientific developments and their effective use.

Workshop Details

This year’s workshop will be an illustration of what Schrödinger’s Platform might look like in the context of a retrospective study using the HIV protease target. A number of tools will be applied to the design of an initial hit compound that exhibits low potency, in order to achieve a more potent lead like inhibitor, where we will attempt to tackle typical hurdles that might arise during the course of a real drug design project.

The workshop will consider:

  • How to extract starting data using Automated Compound Extraction tool ACE
  • How to get a feel for the target using SiteMap, WaterMap for hydration analysis, and Molecular Dynamics in order to start virtual SAR design
  • The exploration of many SARs, where FEP will be used to validate and rationalize ideas
  • How to dig into FEP calculations to understand predictions beyond a single predictive number: We will discuss desolvation penalties and force field usage
  • The use of Core Hopping to distinguish how different methods can offer complementary ideas for project progression. This includes the use of GPU Shape among other tools
  • The use of experimental data and its interplay with the design process
  • The use of custom Python scripts to make FEP predictions more amenable to modelers and chemists allowing for more concise decisions to be made
  • The exploration of active learning and generative models to see how they complement traditional design: Can they answer the same questions, in a faster time frame?
  • Demonstration of this study via Maestro and LiveDesign

Roundtable Discussion

During lunch and coffee breaks throughout the meeting, a Schrödinger-hosted roundtable discussion will take place to highlight relevant topics of the industry. The discussions will be held on the indicated tables in the coffee break rooms on Thursday and Friday. Carlsberg, which has his home base in Copenhagen Denmark, is currently the 3rd biggest beer-brewing company in the world.

Joerg brings a strong background and experience of different senior leadership roles in FMCG and adult education/training companies. The last 13 years he led Human Resources and Organizational development functions at Coca-Cola and played a significant role in establishing strong organizational cultures and building solid leadership and talent pipelines in markets such as Austria, Italy, Japan and Germany. Since February 2020 Joerg he is leading and orchestrating the development of a strong performance oriented culture at Cola-Cola European Partners, a 2020 formed bottling operation, covering big parts of Europe. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Vienna University of Economics and IMD Lausanne and is a certified business coach and supervisor. He is an 10+ times Ironman triathlon finisher and currently based in Berlin and Vienna.

Dr. Mark van Dongen is a business savvy Globally experiences HR executive with working and living experiences both in Europe and Middle East. His deep expertise is built upon personal leadership experience, combined with deep academic knowledge, he obtained next to his work, culminating in his PhD in leadership development. Next to his regular position as HR executive he is a visiting professor of leadership development at the Luxembourg School of Business, a frequently asked keynote speaker, who spoke in US, Europe, Middle East, India and Australia, and business writer in the field of leadership.

Mark Vlaanderen is a versatile HR generalist with passion for behavioral dynamics, talent, transformation and analytics. Since it adopted the CoE model in 2012 he has been in the leadership, talent and learning space for Philips, where he currently focusses on talent & leadership development for Philips’ global commercial footprint. He also leads the group efforts on talent & leadership review and talent analytics. He has worked extensively on cultural- and organizational transformation, most recently in the disentanglement of Philips Lighting. Mark holds a master’s degree in organizational psychology from the University of Amsterdam.

7 events not to be missed across Germany in May 2020

1. Green Sauce Festival, Frankfurt (May 12th — May 19th)

For over ten years, dozens of Hessian restaurateurs have been coming together for this annual festival, each of them vying for first place in the green sauce competition.

Green sauce is a culinary creation that hails from Frankfurt. It contains seven herbs: parsley, cress, chives, sorrel, borage, pimpinella and chervil. The herbs are then mixed with quark and traditionally served with potatoes and boiled eggs.

During the week the festival is on, visitors can sample the chefs’ green sauces and vote on their favourite. The chefs battle it out to the final round and visitor votes determine who wins the competition.

In addition to live music, cabaret performers and musicians, a daily market will also be running throughout the event serving up dishes which incorporate green sauce in some way. Everything from Argentinean steaks to Sicilians rice balls will be on offer.

2. Dresden Music Festival, Dresden (May 10th — June 10th)

Bidding to be named European “Capital of Culture” in 2025, the capital city of Saxony is keen to attract visitors to its 41st annual Music Festival, which runs for a month starting on May 10th.

At 22 venues in the city’s historic centre, 1,500 artists from across the world — including renowned orchestras, soloists and ensembles — will showcase their talent. “Mirrors” is the theme of the 2020 Dresden Music Festival, which according to the mayor of Dresden, Dirk Hilbert, alludes to the dimension of human culture.

The theme of reflections also points to the historical references which transport works of the great composers of the past into our world today, says Hilbert.

3. Rhine in Flames, Rhine River banks from Bonn to Linz (May 4th — May 6th)

In a tradition which dates back to 1756, the banks of the Rhine River from Bonn to the municipality of Linz will once again be lit up by fireworks during the first weekend in May in a spectacular show of colour and lights.

Spectators have the choice to either gather in the Rheinaue leisure park in Bonn or enjoy the view while floating down the river towards the former capital in an illuminated boat.

From 9:35pm, six large firework displays will be set off on May 5th. Though you’ll have to stay up if you really want to be impressed; the final firework show due to kick off at 11:15pm is meant to be a highlight in that it will be synchronized to music from five continents.

The event is the first in a series along the Rhine between May and September.

4. re:publica, Berlin (May 2nd — May 4th)

Concerned about digitalization and how it will affect society in Europe? Head to re:publica in the nation’s capital in the first week of of May, where you can ponder ideas having to do with digital civil rights, digital policy and the fight for a free, open internet.

What originally started as a meeting of bloggers in 2007 has grown to become a conference of activists, scientists, hackers, journalists, and entrepreneurs among others.

The event has also expanded beyond just being a conference providing discussions and workshops. This year for the first time a “Netzfest” — an outdoor event that’s free of charge where visitors can engage with others in talks about all things digital — will be held at Park am Gleisdreick.

A lesser-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm is The Bremen Town Musicians, which follows the antics of a rooster, cat, dog and donkey. You can experience the tale for free through a live performance taking place over the next few months in Bremen.

The event starts in May and ends in September, with performances every Sunday at midday on the Cathedral Square.

Attention, movie buffs! The 33rd Documentary Film Festival takes place in the Bavarian capital in May, featuring films from all over the globe.

Claiming to be one of Europe’s largest documentary film festivals, the festival states on its website that it aims to “support directors from so-called ‘low produc­tion countries’, work on impacting artistic documentary films and initiate sustainable relationships between established filmmakers and newcomers.”

At theatres in the centre of Munich during the week-and-a-half-long festival you will have your choice of German films and African films with everything else in between.

Starting from the last weekend of May and stretching into early June, this festival is based in a south German city where wine has been grown for over 1,000 years. You’ll be able to try over 100 different wines at the Weindorf (wine village) in the heart of Würzburg’s market square.
