How to Extend a Student Visa for Canada

Students who want to extend their student visas for Canada have to fill out an Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada. It is important to check the study permits expiry date and apply before this date. You should complete the application for renewal at least one month before your student visa expires. This is important because if your visa has expired and you havent applied for renewal, you will have to leave the country.

Note that you cannot extend your student visa beyond your passports expiry date. If your passport expires soon, you should consider visiting the embassy or a local consulate to renew your passport. Another point to consider is that if you travel outside Canada, your student visa will expire while you are abroad. So, you should apply for renewal if you are planning to travel. On the other hand, if you have applied for extension and havent received an answer, you are allowed to continue your study until you receive an answer.

The application package can be downloaded online. It is available to temporary residents who are students in Canada and want to extend their stay. Students, who want to correct problems with their temporary status, change their status or the conditions of their stay should also complete this application. The application can be submitted in two ways. It can be downloaded and mailed, together with all required documents or submitted electronically. If you choose the first method, you should mail the application, along with all fees and documents to the Case Processing Centre in Alberta.

On your application, you should specify whether you are applying for an initial study permit or the extension of such, an extension of visitors resident status, an initial work permit or its extension, or a restoration of temporary status as a student, visitor, or worker. You have to fill out your personal details, including your name, date of birth, country of last residence, and passport number. You should write down your passport number together with the date of issue and expiry date. Other details to fill out include marital status (e.g. common-law partner, separated, etc), specifying whether your spouse, if you have one, is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen. You should include information for other family members as well, pointing if they are currently living in Canada. Finally, you should write down the amount of money you have to support yourself while studying in Canada. Specify whether you receive support from general welfare assistance, friends, relatives, or you support yourself.

You have to provide additional information in case your family or you have remained in Canada beyond your status validity. You should also explain in writing in case you worked without authorization or attended school without authorization. In addition to these, you are asked whether you or your family members who live in Canada have been charged or convicted of offence or crime in any country. If the answer is yes, you need to give information about the sentence, type of conviction, and charge. Finally, if you or your family suffers from serious physical or mental illness, you have to give more details. You have to specify the name and period of illness, along with the treatment received. The information you provide in your application for renewal is collected in accordance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

So you are planning to stay in Canada?

As you probably know there are few options available to stay in Canada after IEC, depending on what you are planning to do.

Moving to Canada on IEC soon? Make sure to join our new IEC Canada Visa group here.

Beautiful Vancouver In Spring

When your work permit is soon due to expire, you are probably considering the best way to extend your stay in Canada after your working holiday visa in Canda.

The government of Canada has a great tool which will help you clarify which programs you can apply for. To find out which visa is most suitable for you, please go to CIC website here.

The three most popular options include:

1. Stay In Canada After IEC As A Visitor.

This means you won’t be able to work, but you can still enjoy your time here and travel. You must apply for a visitor visa at least 30 days before your work permit expires.

Once you apply and your IEC expires, you are then on implied visitor status. You can’t leave Canada while waiting for the status confirmation, if you do so, you will lose the status.

If you decide to leave Canada before your status is approved, you can cancel the application. The application fee is currently at $100 per person.

The application fee is currently at $100 per person.
Once your application is approved, you can stay in the country for up to six months.

More details on how to apply and stay in Canada after IEC are available on Canadian Gov site here.

2. Apply For Young Professionals Program.

This type of visa is designed for young, post-secondary graduates who wish to pursue their careers in Canada. You need to have either a contract or at least a job offer from Canadian employer to be able to apply.

The job has to be within your area of expertise and field of study.

First, you need the same requirements as for the Working Holiday visa in Canada as well as your job offer must be classified as a National Occupation Code (NOC) Skill Type Level 0, A or B.

Unlike with WHV where you have an open work permit, the Young Professionals program allows you to work only with one employer who offered you the job.

After your visa is granted, given you are in Canada, you have to leave the country and re-enter the border to activate your YP visa.

3. Work In Canada Through The Express Entry Programme.

There is a lot of steps involved in the EEP, and it might be in your best interest to seek professional help.

The Express Entry program focuses mainly on skilled, experienced candidates who can for one of the following:

Depending on the amount of CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) points you have, the higher the chance of you getting the invitation.

The points are based on factors such as:
Skills, education, work experience, language ability as well as a job offer, degree or diploma you might have.

The invitations are only sent out to applicants with the highest scores. Once you receive the invite, you will have 90 days to complete all required information.

After you submit everything, it might take up to six months to receive the status.
The application process starts off very similar to IEC requiring some of the following:

  • Passport with all pages that have stamps on them
  • Digital photo
  • Police Certificate from every country you spent 6+ months since 18 years old
  • Education information such as certificates, diplomas etc
  • Medical exam
  • Employment records

There are of course many other options out there for anyone looking to stay in Canadia after IEC. These are however the most common paths taken by working holiday visa holders.

If you are unsure what to do next and if you are eligible to stay in Canada under a different program we recommend checking with migration expert.

Extending your stay

Finished your studies and interested in staying in Canada either temporarily or permanently to work?

This section provides information on the steps you have to take after you complete your studies. They apply to graduates of a Université Laval program.

Immigration process for permanent residence in Canada (allow 18 to 24 months)

If you have completed your studies and would like to stay in Canada to work, you can apply for a temporary post-graduation work permit to replace your study permit.

A post-graduation work permit is valid for the same duration as your program of study, or a minimum of 8 months and a maximum of 3 years. If you have earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, the permit is usually valid for 3 years.

To be eligible, you must have fulfilled all the conditions of your program, including language requirements, internships, dissertation defense, and final submission.

Очень важная для вас статья:  профессия автокрановщик 20лет стаж есть ли шансы Канада

You must apply within 180 days of completing your studies, and your study permit must have been valid at one point during the 180 days.

Processing times are usually much longer by mail, so consider doing it online.

You can check processing times for applications submitted inside Canada at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

There is a C$255 application fee (Fees valid 1st May 2020) for the post-graduation work permit.

Standard documents required to get a post-graduation work permit:

  • Official confirmation that you have completed your program of study and final transcripts
  • Valid study permit
  • Passport
  • Passport photograph
  • Other documents specific to your situation (e.g., medical exam)

Note
Once you have your post-graduation work permit, you will be eligible for a number of Québec and Canadian social security programs, including health insurance offered by Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). Apply for your health insurance card as early as possible, because a waiting period of up to 3 months may apply.

Important
An application for a work permit submitted inside Canada does not include a temporary resident visa (TRV) application. You must wait to apply for the TRV until you have received your new work permit. There is an application fee for the visa.

Note: Receiving the permit to work in Canada
When you apply for a work permit from within Canada, it will be mailed directly to your place of residence in Québec. When you receive it, staple it in your passport. Notify IRCC of any change of address after you have submitted your application.

How to extend your study permit in Canada?

How to extend your visa in Canada?

When you first get your study permit, you may notice that its expiry date is the date your degree or programme ends, plus 90 days. And if your passport expires before the programme end date, then your study permit will expire along with your passport. So it would save a lot of time and hassle if you renewed your passport before you apply for the permit.

When can you apply for post graduate work permit?

If you intend to work in Canada after studying there, you can be a part of the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) Programme. In this, individuals who are international and have graduated from a post-secondary institution can apply and get a three-year work permit. In addition, having a job offer at the time of application is not necessary. However, you must submit the application within 90 days of the end date of your programme.

What is basic eligibility criteria for a PGWP?

  • You should be a full time student, in a programme that is more than eight months in duration.
  • You are going to graduate from a school that is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • You should submit an application for a work permit within 90 days of receiving your diploma, degree, or written confirmation from your school that you have successfully completed the programme.
  • You have a valid study permit at the time of the application.

How long is a post-graduation work permit valid?

  • For a three-year work permit, your program must have a duration of minimum two years.
  • If your program runs from eight months to two years, then you are eligible for a work permit of the same duration as the program of study.

How to apply for a work permit?

  • Start and submit your application at gc.ca.
  • Processing time is 4 – 6 weeks, so plan ahead!
  • Application fee is $255 CAD.
  • Documents needed are: Passport/travel document and proof of successful completion of program. Other documents may be required depending on the situation.

Things to keep in mind about post-graduation work permit:

  • If you have a PGWP, you can leave Canada and return as long as the PGWP is still valid on the date you return.
  • The PGWP cannot be renewed.
  • Once the duration of this work permit ends, you will have to apply for a different permit or visa, if you want to continue working in Canada.
  • You can only receive one PGWP in total.
  • For example, if you obtain a PGWP after your Bachelor’s degree, work for two years, and do a Master’s degree, you cannot apply for another PGWP after your Master’s degree.

This opportunity allows you to continue staying in Canada and pursue your career of choice, even if you do not have a job offer while applying for the work permit. That being said, submit the application well in advance, in case additional documents are required.

How to extend stay in Canada for relatives? Канада

If an individual want to extend his stay in Canada, he should apply 30 days before his status expires. It could be the extension of visitor, student or work status, change of permit type or permit condition. The expiry date will be on the study or work permit, the stamp in the passport or, if an individual does not have a stamp in his passport, 6 months from the day he entered Canada.

Implied status

If an individual applies to extend his permit, and the visitor visa expires while he is waiting for a decision, he still have temporary resident (visitor) status which is known as implied status.

How long can an Australian stay in Canada without a Visa?

I have a trip booked in september and I would like to know how long I can stay there without needing a Visa.

4 Answers

6 months, after that you can apply to extend your stay while you’re here in Canada.

Your «visa» is the stamp you receive in your passport when entering the country.

It has two dates on it; the one on which you entered, and the one which is when you have to leave. The normal difference between the two is 182 days (just less than 6 months — because if you are in the country for 183 days, you are subject to Canada tax rate on worldwide income for that calendar year . and that would be in addition to your usual Australian taxes).

You can — at some point — extend your stay if the situation warrants it by contacting the nearest border point and/or the Australina embassy/consulate in Canada. But be cognizant of the tax laws!

As an Australian, you do not need a visa, and ay stay 6 months. see website below for possible ways to extend your visit.

Canada Student Visa Extension

You must submit an application to renew your study permit at least 30 days before it expires.

A Canadian Student Visa allows international students to begin their study programs or get educational degrees in Canada. They must be registered in an institution that is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and fulfill other requirements.

When to extend the study permit for Canada?

The Canada Study Permit is valid for the time that you are studying and an additional 90 days to give you time to prepare to leave Canada. However, if you see that your study permit is close to expiring and you still have to attend your school to get your degree, then you must apply for extension.

You must submit an application to renew your study permit at least 30 days before it expires. You can check the expiry date which is located in the top right corner of the study permit. Before you apply for extension, you must make sure that your passport is still valid. You cannot get an extension if your passport has expired and if you travel out of Canada with an expired passport, you will not be allowed to enter again.

If you are planning to travel outside of Canada and your study permit is close to expiration, you must first apply for it and then travel. Do not leave Canada if your study permit is close to expiry because the Canadian authorities will not let you back in.

If you apply for an extension of your study permit and during the time that the application is being processed, your old study permit expires, you will be allowed to stay in Canada until a decision is made on whether to allow your renewal or not.

If your study permit has already expired and you have not applied for an extension, then you will have to leave Canada. Then from outside of Canada, you can apply for a new study permit or for the restoration of your status as a student.

How to Apply for a Canada Study Permit Extension?

If you have decided to extend your study permit, then you must start the process at least 30 days before it expires. You can either apply online or submit your documents on paper. To make the process easier, it is recommended that you apply online. If you decide to apply on paper, then you must follow the same process outlined below, but you must also contact the government of the province you are living in to find out where you should mail your documents.

To apply for an extension of your study permit, you must follow these steps:

  1. Login to your account on the Government of Canada website. If you do not have an account, then you can create one through your bank account details of through the Government of Canada Key (GCKey).
  2. Start your application for the extension of your study permit by going to this link.
  3. Submit the necessary forms such as:
    • IMM 5709 – Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Student;
    • IMM 5409 – Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union if you have a common law partner that you would like to remain with you in Canada;
    • IMM 5646 – Custodian Declaration if you have a child studying in Canada under the custody of another person;
    • IMM 5476 – Use of a Representative if you are using a representative of you for the application purposes.
In the application form, you will be required to write the document number on the study permit. This is also called a Unique Client Identifier (UCI), which you will find on your study permit or on any letter that have been sent to you by the Canadian Government.
  1. With these forms, you will also have to attach supporting documents as the ones required on the initial Canada study permit application

All the documents must be in English or French and if they have been translated, you must provide proof that the translation is correct. If you are from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada, then you may also be asked to submit your biometric information. The Canadian Consulate will contact you to set an appointment and you must attend it. If you are from a country that does not require a visa to enter Canada, but only an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), then you will not need to submit your biometrics until the year 2020.

The supporting documents and application forms must then be submitting either online using your Government of Canada account login or mail them to the appropriate authorities.

How long is the processing time for a study permit extension application?

The application for extending your study permit will be processed and an answer will be sent to you after you submit it. The processing time depends on the workload of the Canadian Consulate and it may take at least 30 days.

If the answer has not been sent to you within 120 days from the time you applied, then you should contact the Canadian Consulate. The reason for this is that you must know whether your status in Canada is still valid or if you have to leave the country and re-apply for a study permit.

After processing your application, the Canadian Consulate will inform you whether your extension was approved or not. If it was approved, then you will be allowed to stay in Canada until the end of your program. If it was denied, you will have to return to your home country.

What are the fees for extending a Canada student permit?

The fees for extension must be paid in order for your application to be processed. The fees per person per application are CAD$150, while if you are required to submit biometrics, you must also pay an additional CAD$85.

Only after you pay the fees, the Canadian Consulate will begin to process your extension application, while if you refuse to pay, they will deny you automatically.

Should I apply for extensions for my family too?

The temporary resident permits (TRP) that your close family got, so your spouse or common law partner and minor children are dependent on your status. So if your status expires, then your family’s status also expires and they must leave Canada with you.

This means that when you apply to extend your study permit, you must also apply to extend the resident permits of your family. If you only extend your study permit, but not your family’s, then they will have to leave Canada while you stay and complete your study program.

It is recommended to submit the application to extend your study permit together with the applications to extend the temporary resident permits of your family so that the Canadian Consulate knows you are applying as a family together.
