Изменения в оценке модулей Writing и Speaking в тесте IELTS

Half Band Scores
From 1 July 2007, we’re making a small but important change which will make IELTS Band Scores more informative.

Scores for each part of the test will still be reported on the scale from 1 to 9, but now the Writing and Speaking modules will be reported in whole or half-bands in the same way as the Reading and Listening modules.

Why is the scoring being changed?
This is the latest in a series of enhancements to IELTS, based on continual consultation with test takers, teachers, Recognising Organisations and other stakeholders around the world.

This range of scores – using full and half-bands – is already used for Listening and Reading. We have consulted a large number of organisations that use IELTS scores, and their feedback tells us that they find the half band scores very helpful as they allow them to specify required language levels more precisely. Many teachers and test takers have also told us that they would like more detailed information on performance in each skill.

What will the benefits be?
There will be two main benefits to the new arrangements:
Recognising Organisations will be able to set their requirements for admission, recruitment, etc, more precisely, based on more detailed information about the test-taker’s performance in each module.
Test takers will get a report that gives them more information on their strengths and weaknesses.

It will also mean that the IELTS scores are easier for everyone to understand because all parts of the exam will now be reported in the same way.

Can test takers get half-band scores for previous tests?
It is not possible to issue half-band scores for Speaking and Writing for tests taken before 1 July 2007.

IELTS for canada

In Canada, being able to communicate and work in one or both of the official languages helps immigrants both socially and in the job market. Proof of language proficiency is a selection factor for some Canadian immigration categories, and in Canada, it is a key requirement for employment. Canadian Language Benchmarks
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the national standard for describing, measuring and recognizing the English proficiency of adult immigrants to Canada. The CLB scales describe different levels of communication. The scales are based on the ability of adults who use English as second or additional languages (ESL/EFL) to perform real life tasks. The scales consist of 12 benchmarks organized in three stages: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each stage has four levels: initial, developing, adequate and advanced. There are benchmarks for four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) because individuals may have strengths and weaknesses in different areas.

Immigration to Canada — Federal skilled workers (Express Entry)

Immigration to Canada is the process by which people migrate to Canada to reside in the country. The majority of these individuals become Canadian citizens. In order to be eligible for Canadian Permanent Residency application under the Federal Skilled Worker class, you must attain at least 67 points. You can get up to 28 points for your language skills. You must prove your language skills by taking a language test approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

IELTS General Training is accepted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as evidence of English language proficiency. IELTS results are also accepted for Canadian citizenship. For details, visit www.cic.gc.ca

Note: IELTS offers �General Training� and �Academic� options. Only the �General Training� test results are accepted for CIC purposes. Your test results must not be more than two years old at the time the application is received.

Study in Canada

In Canada, universities are independent institutions that are partly funded by the government although you must still pay tuition fees. Universities offer programs that lead to different types of degrees in many disciplines and subjects. The official language of instruction at many universities in Canada is English. If your first language is not English, you will be required to demonstrate that you have sufficient ability to complete university-level courses in English.

Normally, if you meet any one of the following conditions you are not required to submit proof of proficiency in English:

  • Mother tongue (language first learned and still used on a daily basis) is English
  • Has obtained (or is about to obtain) an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction
  • Has obtained (or is about to obtain) an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized institution in Canada or the United States of America (anglophone or francophone)
  • Has lived and attended university, or been employed, for at least four consecutive years, in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language.

If you do not meet any of the above-listed conditions, you must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of your application.

Note: Canadian citizenship, in and of itself, is not enough to satisfy the English Language Requirements.

Below you will find the minimum IELTS scores required for entry to some of the top universities in Canada.

University of Toronto

Applicants for Undergraduate Level Studies: The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
Applicants for Graduate Level Studies (Masters and PhD): The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 7.0.
Applicants to the Faculty of Law: The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 7.0, with no band below 6.5.

McGill University

The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5 (Academic module)

University of British Columbia

A minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component of the academic (NOT general) IELTS test.

Individual graduate programs may require higher English language proficiency scores, and may require minimum scores on individual components of the test.

University of Alberta

English is the primary language of instruction for all programs, except those at Campus Saint-Jean (UAlberta�s French-language campus).
The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 5.0.

McMaster University

The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 5.0.

Western University


The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
Applicants for Undergraduate Nursing programs: IELTS 7, with at least 6.5 in reading and listening and at least 7 in writing and speaking.

University of Calgary

The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 7.0, with no band below 7.0.
Applicants for Nursing programs: The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 8.0, with no band below 7.0.
All other Undergraduate programs: The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5.

University of Ottawa

The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.5 in written section.

Scientists predict that humans will speak the same language in the future. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

MODEL ESSAY

The omnipresence of some languages around the globe has resulted in an anticipation that one specific language will be worldwide spoken by all people in the future. While this trend offers some undeniable benefits, I believe that it is a negative development.

On the one hand, it is true that an universal dialect may help remove language barriers, allowing people from different parts of the world to convey their thoughts and ideas more effectively. Using the same language would, as a result, facilitate many fields including international business transactors, cross-border cooperation and tourism. The emergence of English as the predominant communicative language has testified for this advantage. Furthermore, without linguistic barriers, any country could freely communicate and cooperate with others, forming a global village with a myriad of unprecedented opportunities.

On the other hand, I am of the belief that those aforementioned advantages are negligible when compared with the potential consequence. As people around the world speak merely one language, this would lead to the disappearance of many other languages which are integral to national identities of any country. For example, some ethnics’ cultures in Taiwan would be on the edge of extinction, if minor languages of these tribes are replaced by one global dialect, which poses a dire threat to Taiwan’s cultural diversity.

In conclusion, it seems that people can reap a great number of benefits regarding communication thanks to the use of an universal dialect. I firmly hold the view that the drawbacks should not be overlooked and concrete actions should be taken to retain the linguistic diversity in the world.

Writing Task 2: How to Write a Good Introduction

Introductions can be difficult to write. Usually, when candidates analyze the topic they have to write about in Writing Task 2, they have at least some sense of what they want to say in the body of the essay. They may think of an example or two they want to use or have a few ideas to help them answer the questions in the prompt. But what many candidates struggle with is introducing these ideas in a way that makes sense to their readers, so that these middle parts of the essay don’t seem to just come out of thin air.

Your introduction in Writing Task 2 will create the initial impression on the examiner in terms of your ideas, your writing style, and the overall quality of your writing. An error-filled, confusing, or disorganized introduction will most certainly create a negative first impression. On the other hand, a well-written, engaging and concise introduction will have the opposite effect, which is exactly what you want to achieve. As a result, it’s important that you have strategies for writing a good introduction for Writing Task 2 in order to achieve this desired effect.

Strategies for writing a good introduction

An effective introduction conveys substantial important information clearly but briefly. Think of your introduction as a roadmap for the rest of your essay. This roadmap should let the examiner know what the topic of discussion is, as well as your position in relation to the topic, and you may also choose to briefly explain how you plan to develop the essay. Below are some strategies for writing an effective introduction:

Read and analyze all the information provided to you.
Your entire essay will respond to the question(s) in the prompt and your introduction is the first step towards doing so. Therefore, it is important that you know exactly what you’re being asked to discuss and that you introduce your answer to all of the parts of the prompt.

Do NOT copy material from the prompt.
While the prompt can give you some clues about how to approach your opening paragraph, make sure you use your own words when writing your introduction. Using the same words or phrases from the prompt can show limitations in your range of vocabulary, which can affect your band score. Instead, use synonyms, put the information in a new order, and break down more complex ideas into smaller ones, while making sure you’re accurately stating the topic. To illustrate this, take a look at the following example Writing Task 2 prompt, and notice how the initial statement has been paraphrased so that it can be used as part of an effective introduction:

Prompt:

The first car appeared on British roads in 1888. By the year 2020 there may be as many as 29 million vehicles on British roads.

Alternative forms of transport should be encouraged, and international laws introduced to control car ownership and use.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Paraphrase:“It is evident that there has been a massive growth in car ownership in Great Britain since the first car arrived on British roads in the year 1888.”

Start off with a ‘big picture’ sentence and then focus in on the details of the prompt.
Task 2 prompts normally begin with a broad statement and then narrow to focus on more specific points or questions on the topic. As such, it’s a good idea for you to use a similar model in your own introduction: start off with a ‘big picture’ sentence (or two) and then focus in on the details of the prompt. If you do choose to start your introduction with a ‘big picture’ opening, make sure that it’s closely related to your topic and it’s not too broad. In the prompt presented above, the paraphrased statement is the perfect example of a ‘big picture’ statement, and the details of the prompt would be 1) alternative forms of transport should be encouraged and 2) international laws introduced to control car ownership and use. The following sentence is a good example of focusing in on the details of the prompt:“Some people believe that encouraging other forms of transport and introducing international regulations are necessary to keep future growth in car ownership under control.”

Make your position clear.
Writing Task 2 prompts will always include questions or statements that will encourage you to give your opinion on a topic, agree or disagree with a statement or address specific questions (e.g. What do you think are the advantages of elderly care facilities? Do these outweigh the disadvantages?) Your position then, will come as a direct response to these questions or statements. Given that you’ll be expected to present a clear position throughout your response, you should state it at the beginning of your essay as part of your introduction. In the example prompt above, you’re expected to indicate the degree to which you think the statement is true or untrue (e.g. “I completely agree with the mentioned argument, as new rules and regulations would ensure order in our communities and a better quality of life for all.”) .

Re-read your introduction once you’ve finished writing your essay.
Because the writing process in itself is a way to organize your ideas and refine your thoughts, as you develop the body of the essay in Writing Task 2, you may find that you started out thinking about arguing a particular point but ended up arguing something different. This is why it’s important for you to revise your introduction after completing your essay, to make sure it matches your final thoughts and arguments.Just as a good introduction will help to prepare your examiner for the content of your essay, an effective conclusion will help to remind them of the strength of your main arguments.
