Network engineer

Network Engineering

Build infrastructure that scales beyond Google’s ambitions.

Build infrastructure that scales beyond Google’s ambitions. That’s what our Network Engineers do every day, and they design, maintain and operate both our production and corporate networks. Meeting service requirements in a reliable, scalable and cost-effective manner requires the ingenuity of a team who can identify technologies, define architectures and design methodologies. And who can do so at scale. With commitment to technical excellence, these teams investigate technical solutions on the latest issues — from public policy for broadband to core networking technologies — that ultimately enable Google to deliver the best user experience possible. In fact, it’s this very work that lies at the core of what we do, allowing us to deliver our products and services to our users, customers and Googlers around the globe.

Network Engineer Salary

The basic network engineer salary in Canada ranges from $54000 to $101000 while in Australia it is approximate $80,856 annually. On the other hand, network engineers in the US make up to $88,645which is comparably lower than those working in the UK making a maximum of $104000 yearly. In Switzerland, the annual salary amounts to CHF 86,897 while a Senior Network Engineer in Norway makes approximately $65000. The remuneration of a network engineer depends upon the employer type, salary structure, leadership position, education, location, and experience.

Is every trained network engineer assured of a fat paycheck in all countries alike? If you want to make the salaries mentioned above, you should work on your skill set, experience, select the appropriate employer, and country to work.

Network Engineer Salary Determinants

Despite the variations you can notice on different websites regarding the amount network engineers make, the factors influencing the pay remain constant. In the following section, we will explore some of the determinants individually.

1. Industry

The industry has different organizations whose area of specialization, financial muscle, and employment policies differ significantly. Therefore, each firm designs the remuneration policy depending on their unique considerations. Essentially, most companies recruit engineers on the contractual basis or permanent positions. When the contract cost-profit analysis is completed, remuneration recommendations are made to the human resource personnel who determine what each person makes at the end of the contract.

When you are on permanent employee status, your salary is bound to be higher, constant, and with additional benefits. Additionally, some employers hire freelance network engineers on an hourly basis. The engineer determines the amount they require for the job, an amount that is exclusive of such benefits as insurance or other allowances.

2. Geographical Area

Working as a network engineer in a big city guarantees a better salary compared to rural and sub-urban areas. The pay above differences in the countries discussed can be represented as shown in the table below.

Network Engineer Salary Hourly Wage Annual Wage
US $44 $88,645
Canada $40 $54,000
UK $39 $104,000
Australia $29.48 $80,856
Switzerland CHF20 CHF86,897
Norway $41 $65,000

Network Engineer Salary in the US

On average, a network engineer in the US makes $88,645 a year which is more than the country’s median wage. At the entry level, an engineer can earn $53,000 and $106,000 after gaining experience. On average, the total compensation may start from $74,000 due to bonuses with that of the experienced individual increasing proportionally.

Network Engineer Salary in the UK

Estimates from job adverts show that the average network engineer in the UK makes a maximum of $104,000. The figure is inclusive of bonuses, tips, overtime pay, and other forms of compensation that are applicable in the jurisdiction. In the UK, profit sharing is a common practice and may result in additional compensation where it is applicable.

Working in Australia guarantees you a salary of $80,856 a year. This figure changes proportionately due to profit sharing benefits which amount to approximately AU$1,000. Other bonuses range from AU$49.66-AU$9,060. Like Switzerland, the experience plays a negligible role in the salary determination with most engineers taking on other roles after they have over 20 years of experience.

Network Engineer Salary in Norway

The estimated $65,000 salary is 31.1 percent lower than the Norwegian median wage. Major firms such as Huawei operating in the country set the bar high for remuneration with tips and bonuses. Be that as it may, the experience is a major determinant here with senior engineers making the highest salaries in the industry.

3. Experience

At the entry level, a network engineer makes $60,688, C$60361, 27,051 Euros, AU$64,113 and $73,165 annually in US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Norway respectively. Experienced personnel make $88,645, $54000, $104,000, CHF 86,897, $80,856, and $65,000 in the same countries. Most states reward the more experienced engineers more than the starters.

It is a human resource department’s priority to ensure that valuable skills are retained. In the long run, the quality of the human resources improves with time as the powers are transferred from the senior employees to the starters. However, the experience is not always rewarded proportionally in such countries as Australia.

Bonuses & Benefit Packages

According to Glassdoor, the average network engineer enjoys additional compensation in the form of a cash bonus, stock bonus, shared profit, and commission. However, the figures are based on Cisco culture and are bound to change.

Other sites show like https://www.gsatechsource.com/jobs/cisco-network-engineer-slash-consultant-ccnp-ps45-55kb-plus-12-percent-bonus show that bonuses are up to 12 percent of the basic pay and that the benefits are excellent. In countries such as the UK, bonuses and benefits include training for the employee. There is also the provision of insurance benefits, pension schemes, and living allowances for senior employees. Again, these benefits vary from one employer to the next. The public sector has more of these benefits compared to private or freelance activities.

Working Hours

The average network engineer works for 37-40 hours a week. However, the employer may require the engineer to avail themselves of 24/7 support in which case one can be called even after their shift has ended. Being on on-call and on-shift arrangement means more benefits regarding overtime compensation.

Routine maintenance of computers and communication systems take almost all the allocated work hours. An engineer must allocate an extra hour or two in their time for on-calls and travel. Again, managerial posts and field assignments demand more time than routine tasks at the office.

Job Outlook

The network engineering industry is predicted to decline due to the prevalence of use of cloud computing. By 2020, cloud computing is predicted to eliminate the use of cables and other features that have traditionally kept a network engineer employed. Anyone pursuing a career in network engineering must upgrade their skill set to include the demands of the new trends in the industry.

There are approximately 48961, 827,11091, 501, and 634 in the US, Canada, UK, Norway, and Australia respectively according to Indeed.com. With such openings, an investment in education for a network engineer is a worthy undertaking.

Conclusion

Technological advancements in various fields lead to system complexities which make the work of a network engineer a necessity. At the heart of all modern communication is a network engineer. It is not only a rewarding career but also has opportunities for growth to Network Administrator, Network Designer, and Managerial positions.

How to Immigrate to Canada as an Electrical Engineer

The first stage in your Canadian immigration process is to calculate your Canada Immigration points for Express Entry using the Canadian Comprehensive Ranking System.

CRS Points are awarded for (amongst other things)

Your partner’s skills

As well as providing you with important CRS points these factors also count towards your overall Immigration Points score which must equal or exceed a total of 67

Take our free online visa assessment for an up to date report on whether you have enough points to immigrate to Canada as an Electrical Engineer from both an Express Entry and Immigration points perspective.

Once you receive an ITA (Invitation to apply) from Canadian Immigration as a result of your Express Entry application you’ll only have 60 days in which to lodge a formal application so under no circumstances should you lodge an Express Entry application ‘claiming’ to have certain points without first having all of your points verified through different testing, education equivalence certificates and Professional Qualification assessments.

Once you are invited to apply for your Canada Visa you cannot go back and have these things verified retrospectively, they must be done before you claim any points for them and given that your express entry profile is only valid for one year it makes sense to present the best possible case right from the start.

Electrical Engineering Skills and Qualification Equivalence Assessment

The process of getting your Electrical Engineering skills, experience and qualifications verified is called Skills and Qualification Assessment and it serves two purposes.

Canada Electrical Engineering Skills and Qualification Assessment purpose one: With a positive skills assessment you’ll be able to claim the requisite points on both the Express Entry CRS and eventual Federal Skilled Trades application.

Canada Electrical Engineering Skills and Qualification Assessment purpose two: Your positive skills assessment will also double as your Canada Equivalent Qualification and is used for your relevant professional registrations so having your Electrical Engineering skills assessed means that you’ll be qualified to work as an Electrical Engineer in Canada from day one.

How to get registered to Immigrate to Canada as an Electrical Engineer

As part of your immigration process, your dedicated Electrical Engineer Canada account manager will arrange for your Professional Qualification equivalency process so there’s no need to worry about how to move to Canada ; we’ll have you covered from the moment you get the ball rolling.

Can I immigrate to Canada as an Electrical Engineer without a job offer?

The answer is a resounding yes, providing you have a reasonable total CRS score on your Express Entry application and can meet the 67 immigration point threshold for your Canada Federal Skilled Worker Visa.

Technically there is no minimum CRS score required to submit an Electrical Engineer Canada Express Entry profile.

Of course, securing a job offer (documented in the right way for immigration purposes i.e. LMT) will give you an instant CRS boost of 600 points so it makes sense to start this process as soon as is practical.

Electrical Engineering Jobs in Canada

Occupations on the Canada NOC list can be classed as being ‘in demand’ and the Electrical Engineer code 2133 has been firmly established on the list for many years with lots of opportunities right across the country.

As a qualified new and highly skilled Permanent resident of Canada, you may work full time from day one, either as a direct employee, contractor or in a self-employed capacity. Electrical Engineering jobs in Canada are often better paid than in the UK, Europe and Asia and Canadian employment law respects the work-life balance. Additionally, Electrical Engineers in Canada are highly unionised which whilst sounds like a dirty word in many parts of the world is actually instrumental in championing better pay and conditions right across the Country.

The Canadian Society of Electrical and Computer Engineers can provide more information and membership for Qualified Electrical Engineers in Canada.

P. Eng. (professional engineer).
