TEFL Courses in Toronto | Canada

As the most populous city in Canada and the fourth most populous in the whole of North America, Toronto can certainly claim to be one of the world’s truly great cities. The city is also the capital of the province of Ontario and is at the heart of Canadian business, finance, arts and culture. According to dozens of surveys and polls Toronto is consistently rated as one of the most livable cities in the world, which is yet another reason why this multicultural and cosmopolitan city provides the perfect venue for completing a TEFL/TESOL training course.

The first European settlement in the area was established by the British in the late 18th century. Originally known as York, the city was renamed Toronto in 1834 and it then became the provincial capital in 1867. The city steadily grew in size over the coming decades due to large scale immigration from countries right across Europe and beyond, something that has continued to this day. Toronto is now one of the most diverse cities in the world with around half of its residents having been born outside of the country. This cultural diversity is one reason why the city draws so many visitors from all over the world, year after year.

Visitors to this magnificent city will find plenty of things to keep them busy during the day and through the evenings. The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the biggest and most popular museums in the whole of North America, while the Art Gallery of Ontario houses a very impressive collection of works from around the world. Sport lovers will also feel right at home as the city is represented by several major sports teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the original and most successful members of the NHL. The most recognizable feature in the city is undoubtedly the CN Tower which is still the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere. No trip to Toronto would be complete without taking a trip to the top of the tower to take in the breathtaking views of the city.

Outdoor pursuits are another very popular pastime in and around the city, particularly during the colder months. Winter sees the arrival of several public skating rinks, ice skating trails, cross-country tracks and slopes for skiing and snowboarding. Whether you enjoy winter sports or prefer less energetic pursuits, you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the residents of this delightful city whatever time of year you visit.

The School

Our TEFL/TESOL certification course in Toronto is located in a working language academy that is conveniently situated close to public transport links and a variety of local facilities. The city’s excellent bus and rail networks ensure you are only ever a short journey away from all the main attractions in the area, as well as major transport hubs such as Pearson International Airport and Union Station.

The course is based in a language center that provides lessons to a wide cross-section of the local community. Within the center you will find several well-appointed classrooms that provide the perfect environment for completing your training. You will also have access to all the resources and equipment necessary for planning and delivering ESL lessons including photocopying facilities, Wi-Fi internet access and the use of our resource library. During break times you can take advantage of our complimentary drinks area or visit the various shops and cafes that can be found in the local neighborhood.

To make sure that all our students receive sufficient support from our course trainers we limit the number on each course to around 10 participants. Another positive feature of the course is the fact that it is based in a working language school so you will have plenty of opportunity to practice your teaching skills in a real classroom with genuine English language learners. Class times for our Toronto course are 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Practical English Usage

As I was preparing to take the TEFL course to teach abroad and inquiring about the different books that the school was suggesting, I was told simply by my son who is also a teacher and the statement was confirmed by both my instructors, «just buy Swan, it’s the bible and it’s all you need». Practical English Usage is just that. For whatever reason Michael Swan decided to write this book, we are forever grateful. — Margaret M. Frye 5/5

Learning Teaching

«Learning Teaching» has been one of the most successful guides to English since it was first published in 1994. Its no-nonsense approach has made it a superb teaching textbook for initial training courses, and also an essential handbook for practising ELT teachers. The third edition has been extensively revised and restructured to take recent developments in ELT into account and now includes a DVD featuring a full lesson being taught as well as demonstrations of practical teaching techniques.

A Concise Grammar for English Teachers

I used Tony Penston’s book when I was learning how to teach English as a Foreign Language. I found it really useful then and I still carry it with me for all teaching assignments — and I regularly refer to it for some grammatical point or other. It’s easy to find what you want and nice and concise! It gets straight to the point. Apparently he’s even got a sense of humour too, rarely seen in a grammarian, and a relief to this user. This really good book is useful for all teaching levels. Great value too. I do not hesitate to recommend it to all English language teachers. — John Osman 5/5
