PGWP Канада

PGWP Канада

Due to the temporary nature of a study permit, many countries force you to leave once you have completed your studies. While this is true for Canada, newly graduated students are eligible to stay in the country and pursue employment opportunities with a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

WHAT IS IT?

A PGWP is an open work permit visa, allowing individuals to seek employment anywhere within the country after they graduate. Unlike most work visas, you are not tied to a specific employer and do not need a formal job offer to be granted the permit. This allows students to stay in Canada after they graduate and gain valuable work experience while building their professional network.

If you are looking to permanently immigrate to Canada, the career experience you obtain from a PGWP can significantly increase your chances of being accepted!

HOW CAN WE HELP?

If you are looking to come to Canada as an international student our team of immigration experts can help you find the right program and school that suits your needs. Once you have graduated, we can also guide you through the process of obtaining your own Post-Graduation Work Permit and even becoming a permanent resident.

Wondering how you can begin the process? Take our free online assessment today to discover your options to come to Canada as an international student!

(Social Insurance Number)

3. Получить визу типа Temporary Resident для беспрепятственного пересечения государственных границ Канады

Study In Canada Cand >

April 10, 2020 – Prospective study in Canada candidates planning to stay and work here after graduation are being warned they need to make sure both their chosen course and institution are eligible.

Candidates only meet the requirements for Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit if they graduate from a designated learning institution in a PGWP-eligible program.

The PGWP allows international students to stay and work in Canada for between eight months and three years after they graduate.

The length of the work permit depends on the length of the program, provided the program is eligible.

Time spent working in Canada can then count towards an application for permanent residence.

A full list of designated learning institutions that offer PGWP-eligible programs is available on the federal government website.

It is important to note that not all designated learning institutions offer programs that meet the requirements for the PGWP.

The institution and course requirements have always been in place, but were brought to light by a recent investigation into the immigration consultancy industry by Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper.

The investigation found immigration consultants being paid significant fees were promising international students a pathway to permanent residence.

In certain cases, foreign students invested thousands of dollars in consultancy fees and tuition fees to come to Canada, expecting to qualify for the PGWP after graduation, only to find out they did not.

Post Graduation Work Permit: Who Can Apply?

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Have continuously studied full-time in Canada in a program at least eight months long.
  • Have completed and passed all your program requirements.
  • Apply within six months of completing the program.
  • Graduate from one of the following:
    1. Public post-secondary school, such as a college, trade/technical school or university, or CEGEP in Quebec.
    2. Private post-secondary school that operates under the same rules as public schools (currently applies only to certain private post-secondary institutions in Quebec).
    3. Private secondary or post-secondary school (in Quebec) that offers qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer, leading to a diplôme d’études professionnelles(DEP) or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP).
    4. Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate degree) but only if you are enrolled in a study program leading to a degree as authorized by the province.

A three-step process has been established in Canada targeting international students. First, they hold Study Permits while in full time education, second, they can become eligible for a Post Graduation Work Permit, and third, they can use all the experience gathered to qualify for permanent residence.

As of the end of 2020, there were 572,415 Study Permit holders in Canada, a 16 per cent rise on the 492,425 recorded in 2020.

The figures cover students from high schools, colleges and universities, in Canada benefitting from its world class education system.

Study Permit numbers have increased 180 per cent in the last decade, as successive governments have recognized the benefit to the Canadian economy of increasing international student levels.

International students are an important source of revenue for Canada’s schools, paying significantly higher tuition fees than their Canadian counterparts.

With Canadian education much cheaper than across the border in the U.S., Canada’s best universities are often seen as a pathway to a world class education without the dollar outlay required south of the border.

Students from India and China dominate the international student landscape, accounting for 315,610, or 55 per cent, of the total Study Permit holders in Canada.

The political climate in the U.S. is also pushing many would-be international students towards Canada as a study-abroad option.

Candidates who would previously only have considered America are turning their attention north because of the anti-immigration stance taken by Donald Trump’s government.

As the U.S. makes it more difficult to move there, and life more difficult for immigration already in the country, Canada is doing the opposite, particularly for international students.

Working after Completing Studies

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit, allowing the holder to work for any employer in Canada.

The length of the PGWP depends on the length of the study program the student has completed, up to a maximum of three years. The Canadian work experience gained through working while on a PGWP can be used to qualify for permanent residence through Express Entry and SINP.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a PGWP you should meet the following conditions:

  • Continuously studied full-time for the entirety of your program of study, exceptions may be made for the following:
    • Authorized leave from studies
    • Part time status for final academic session
  • Completed a program of study from the University of Saskatchewan and have written confirmation of program completion
  • Your program of study was at least 8 months in length
  • Held a valid study permit for the entirety of your program and have valid immigration status in Canada at the time of applying for the PGWP (eg. study permit or visitor status)
    • If you are applying from outside of Canada, no valid immigration document is needed at the time of application
  • Apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion

Leave from studies

If you took an authorized leave from your studies that did not exceed 150 days you may still be eligible for the PGWP so long as the processing immigration officer is satisfied that you met the conditions of your study permit ; including the requirement to actively pursue your program of study.

Part-time status for final academic session

If you maintained full-time student status during each academic session of your program with the exception of your final academic session (that is, you were a part-time student) you are still eligible for a PGWP.

You are not eligible if you took part in specific Canadian funded scholarships.

IRCC has provided further guidance for unique situations , such as distance learning, transfers between educational institutions and programs with overseas components.

On February 14, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made changes to the application process of the post-graduate work permit (PGWP). This website has been updated to reflect those changes.

Applying

When to apply

You must apply for a PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation from the University of Saskatchewan indicating that you have met the requirements for completion of your academic program. The date of your graduation ceremony is not relevant, do not wait until the graduation ceremony to apply for the PGWP.

You can apply for a PGWP from within or outside of Canada. You can apply for a PGWP from within Canada, leave and seek to re-entry to Canada before a decision is made on your application so long as you have a valid TRV or eTA for re-entry into Canada. After re-entry, you are eligible to work while waiting for a decision on your PGWP application.

If you apply for a PGWP from outside of Canada, you must wait for the letter of invitation to be issued by IRCC before arriving in Canada. The letter of invitation is a document you present to a Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) Agent at your first port of entry in Canada. They must be satisfied that all admissibility requirements have been met before issuing you your PGWP and allowing you to enter Canada. For more information, please review Port of entry

How to apply

You can apply for the PGWP either online, or by paper.

You must include in the application written confirmation from the University of Saskatchewan of program completion AND an official or unofficial transcript.

After you get your PGWP

  • Make a copy of it and store the original safely.
  • If you are going to work in Canada, you will need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN). If you did not receive a SIN at the port of entry, you must apply at Service Canada.
  • Apply for a new Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to re-enter Canada (if applicable).
  • Renew your Saskatchewan Health Card.

Your PGWP will not be issued beyond the expiry date of your passport. If you are eligible for a longer PGWP than what is your passport’s validity, then you must apply again for PGWP after you renew your passport.

Working after completing academic requirements for program of study, but prior to receiving written confirmation of program completion

After completing your final academic requirements, but before receiving written confirmation of program completion from the University, you are eligible to work part-time on or off campus, so long as:

  • You hold a valid study permit;
  • You were a full-time student in your last academic semester (or, you maintained full-time status for the duration of your degree except your final semester and you were part-time your final semester because you only required a part-time course load to complete your degree);
  • You did not work more than 20 hours off campus during regular academic session.

Once you receive written confirmation of program completion you must cease working and leave Canada within 90 days or apply to change your status (eg. visitor status or PGWP).

Working after submitting PGWP application and prior to decision being reached on the application

If you applied for a PGWP before the expiry of your study permit, you are eligible to work full time, without a work permit, while waiting for a decision on the application if all of the following apply to you:

  • You had a valid study permit at the time of applying for your PGWP (If you applied for a PGWP on visitor status you will not be able to work until you receive the PGWP)
  • You have completed your program of study
  • You were in compliance of your study permit during your studies
  • You did not exceed the allowable hours of on and off campus work during your studies

If your PGWP is refused, you must stop working immediately. Please visit ISSAC.

Working between two programs of study

If you have completed a program of study and will be starting a new program of study within 150 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion from your current University, you may work off campus (not on campus), full-time, so long as:

  • The program you will be enrolled in, and the program you completed, are post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training programs, of duration of six months or more, that lead to degrees, diplomas or certificates;
  • You have received written confirmation of program completion from your current University; and
  • You have a valid study permit, or have submitted an application to extend your study permit prior to your current study permit expiring and as such you have implied status.

If you have applied to extend your stay in Canada as a student and your study permit application is refused, then you must inform your employer and cease working immediately.

You can only work on campus if you are a full time student at, and have a valid study permit with, that particular University. Implied status does not allow on campus work between study permits.

HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT IMMIGRATION TO CANADA?

Who is eligible for a Canadian Immigration Visa?

Both federal, and Quebec skilled workers, provincial nominees and individual who have studied in Canada and/or have a work experience in the country; and as well as business individuals falling under Canada’s economic immigration category streams may be qualified for Canada Immigration Visas. Also, if you are a close family member Canadian citizen or permanent resident, then you may receive Canada Immigration Visas by family sponsorship. Finally, the Canadadian Government assigns permanent resident visas to eligible asylum seekers and as well as certain persons based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

How do I find out if I qualify for Immigration to Canada?

If you complete and submit an online assessment, we will evaluate at no charge.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an electronic management application system for immigration to Canada.

It is not an immigration program and it facilitates the selection and processing of Canada’s economic immigration programs:

  • the Federal Skilled Worker Class (formerly the Federal Skilled Worker Program),
  • the Federal Skilled Trades Class (formerly the Federal Skilled Trades Program),
  • the Canadian Experience Class, and
  • a portion of the Provincial Nominee Programs.

Applicants make an “expression of interest” (EOI) in immigrating to Canada; and, if they are eligible for at least one of the aforementioned programs, they then enter the Express Entry pool. The federal government and provincial governments, as well as Canadian employers, are then able to select candidates from this pool. The candidates will then receive an Invitation To Apply (ITA) for immigration to Canada under one of the programs.

What is the procedure to study in Canada?

First, you need to get admission to a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) recognized by the government of Canada. Upon receiving a letter of acceptance from a DLI, he or she may be able to apply for a study permit online or by mail.

Please be advised that new study permits are issued at a Canadian port of entry. An applicant who has submitted an application to a foreign Canadian Visa Office will be issued a letter of approval advising him or her to travel to a Canadian port of entry to have the study permit issued. A study permit is generally issued for the duration of the person’s studies.

Do I need to show proof of funds when applying for a study permit?

Study permit applicants must prove they have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and financial capacity to support living expenses for the first year of study. Followings show the minimum funds required to support yourself as a student and family members who come with you to Canada:

Number of people All provinces except Quebec
Single student Tuition plus $10,000 for a 12-month period (or $833 per month)
For one accompanying family member add: $4,000 for a 12-month period (or $333 per month)
For each additional family member, add: $3,000 for a 12-month period per dependent child of any age (or $255 per month)

Is it possible to stay in Canada after graduation?

There are many ways to stay and settle in the country after graduation. The most popular option is the possibility for an open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). Under the PGWPP, an individual who has studied full-time at a participating Designated Learning Institution (DLI) may be eligible to apply for a PGWP.

Gaining work experience in Canada after graduation may help you qualify for permanent residence in Canada through a variety of immigration available immigration programs. Generally, if a PGWP is issued, it is for the same duration as the applicant’s studies for a minimum of eight months and a maximum of three years.

Can a spouse be included in the application?

A spouse or common-law partner of a valid study permit holder may be eligible to apply for an open work permit . The open work permit for a spouse or common-law partner may be valid for the same period of time as the study permit, and as long as the study permit remains valid. In the study permit application, the applicant should indicate that the spouse will accompany him or her to Canada. If a spouse later decides to study in Canada, he or she should submit his or her own study permit application.

Who can I include in my application for a Canada Immigration Visa?

You must include your spouse/common-law partner/conjugal partner and any dependent children under 22 years in the application. If dependent children are 22 and older, they must be full-time students in Canada. Your dependents will be subject to medical and security clearance requirements. A change in family status after your application has been submitted may affect the processing of your application.

To point out, you can not include your parents in your application. However, Canadian citizens and permanent residents may bring their parents and grandparents to Canada through one of two popular programs: Family Class sponsorship and/or the Super Visa program.

IRCC affords equal rights under the Canada immigration application process to same-sex partners.

Not necessarily, though for many candidates, obtaining a valid job offer from a Canadian employer significantly increases their chances for receiving an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

How can your PGWP help you get Canadian PR?

Posted on November 23, 2020

Many aspiring students come to Canada each year with a goal to obtain the Post Graduate Work Permit. It not only helps them gain Canadian work experience but also helps with qualifying for PR.

The most popular program for Permanent Residency in Canada is the Express Entry. However, many students who do not have a foreign post-secondary education or foreign work experience may find it difficult to score enough CRS points. Only those applicants who have high CRS points manage to get an invite for Canadian PR.

The PGWP is a wonderful way to obtain Canadian work experience which can help you get additional points for your Canadian PR. However, before you apply for your PGWP, it is best to calculate your likely CRS scores. You may need to develop an alternate strategy to manage to get an invite for your PR.

The highest CRS Points are a combination of both foreign and Canadian education as well as work experience.

For many young students, it may be advisable to defer their Canada studies until they first obtain a foreign degree. They may also obtain a couple of years of foreign experience in an occupation on the NOC O, A, or B category.

Students who are already pursuing their studies in Canada may want to defer their PGWP. It may be best for them to gain an additional degree to help with their CRS points. The CRS awards a significant amount of points for candidates having two or more degrees. One of those degrees should be of 3-years or longer, as per Asian Pacific Post.

Another significant factor that helps garner additional points is language proficiency in English or French. A test score equivalent to CLB 9 or above is crucial to gaining those extra points for an invite.

You can only ever obtain one Post Graduate Work Permit. Most international students are unaware of the same.

If your ultimate goal is to settle in Canada, it is important that you are aware of your like CRS scores. Doing so before you apply for a PGWP may help you garner enough points for a Canadian PR.

Woori — Центр Образования и Иммиграции

Toronto
