Proof of Accommodation for Schengen Visa
Proof of accommodation is required when applying for Schengen visa, as part of Schengen visa application requirements. It must cover the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area.
It can be provided in one or more forms, as listed below:
- Hotel or hostel booking Include one or more proofs that each shows the name of the place, complete address, phone number, and the email address, for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area.
- Invitation letter from a host (such as relatives or friends) with whom you will be staying. Additionally, a copy of the host’s passport or ID and proof of residence may be required.
- Rental agreement, if you have rented a place (such as an apartment, condo, house, or a room) in the country where you will be staying. It should have the details about the place and the landlord.
- In case of a student who will be staying at the dormitory, a signed contract between the student and the official of a dormitory in the country where the student will be studying.
If you would be backpacking, traveling in a van, or have a tent, such a plan would not be enough for proof of accommodation for Schengen visa application.
Why Is Proof of Accommodation Required?
Part of the Schengen visa requirements is that you should have a well-defined itinerary and a clearly defined purpose of the trip. You should also apply at the appropriate consulate based on your itinerary.
Providing proof of accommodation helps the consular officer make sure that you have applied at the appropriate Schengen embassy/consulate as well as the purpose and the duration of your trip is consistent with what you have mentioned in your application form and with rest of the documents.
From the list provided above, for most people, it would mean that they would need to show the proof of a hotel booking or reservation.
Compared to the flight itinerary for Schengen visa, it much easier to get the proof of a hotel reservation.
You can directly visit the hotel website, ask a local travel agent, or go to the travel web sites. You can book the hotel for your entire stay. It can either be in one city, multiple cities, or even in multiple countries. Most hotels allow you to make a booking without having to prepay for your stay. As long as you cancel at least 24 hours in advance, there is no cancellation fee. Of course, all hotels in the Schengen area don’t operate on the same rule. Therefore, you must check with the travel agent or the hotel to make sure what the cancellation rules are.
You don’t really need to book your hotel reservation through websites that are in the business of giving proof of hotel booking for a fee.
Most hotel bookings will come in the form of an email or itinerary print out as a PDF file. Either one is fine, as long it is genuine.
Don’t try to make a fake hotel booking by using some online template. If the consular officer catches you (which they most likely will), your Schengen visa application will be rejected, and you may not be able to apply again in the future.

The process of securing suitable, reasonably priced accommodation in Canada can be a long and expensive task for expats. There is a general shortage of accommodation in most Canadian metropolises, so new arrivals who don’t know much about the Canadian property market will benefit from using a real estate agent.
Regardless of whether one decides to rent or buy property in Canada, the fact is that accommodation is likely to account for the biggest chunk of an expat’s cost of living.
Types of property in Canada
Expats moving to Canada will find a range of property types available. The options available will vary slightly from one city to the next. This will also depend on whereabouts in a city one chooses to live, whether it’s near the trendiest attractions or closer to schools. However, expats should be able to choose one of the following options depending on where they are based and their budget, as well as personal preferences:
Canada is a modern, highly industrialised and economically stable country, and the standard of accommodation is generally very high. Renting property in Canada
Lease agreements are very important in Canada and are usually followed to the letter. Be sure to read the contract carefully, as once it’s been signed, its conditions will be legally binding. The agreement will cover the following considerations: duration of the lease (usually 12 months), additional financial responsibilities of the tenant (normally water will be included in the rental charge, but tenants will have to pay for gas and electricity usage), deposit (often this will be two months’ rent, refundable in principle), and forfeiture conditions. These explain how any breach of the contract leaves the tenant liable for eviction from the property.
Buying property in Canada
Expats are not only entitled to buy property in Canada, but they are also bound to find the process surprisingly straightforward and hassle-free.
Canada’s unique Multiple Listing Service (MLS) – a centralised database that contains about 95 percent of all properties on the market in Canada – means that much of the hard work involved with finding an ideal property can be done by a real estate agent. Simply go to an agent with a comprehensive list of requirements for the ideal home (location, size, amenities, etc.), and they can then plug the information into a database and provide buyers with a full list of possibilities.
A real estate agent’s central role in helping expat buyers find a new Canadian home will not end there, either. They can also assist in liaising with the seller, and will accompany the buyer to the house inspection (after which they’ll issue a detailed report, chronicling the condition of the property).
If the buyer is satisfied with the property, the agent will then recommend a good estate lawyer to oversee the transaction, and will ensure all the paperwork is in order when it comes time to deal with the bank and arrange finance for the property.

When you are required to present a confirmation of accommodation in the Czech Republic for your visa or residence permit application, but you haven’t signed a valid lease agreement yet (because you are perhaps still in your home country), you can either
a) book an apartment distantly, which requires searching for apartment several months before you arrival, signing a lease agreement before you even see the flat in person, paying the Security Deposit (usually amounts to 1 rent), 1st rent and commission (basically 3x the apartment rent) in advance — this involves a financial risk in case you’d like to move to another apartment upon your arrival, because everything has been paid and signed.
b) arrange a legitimate accommodation proving your residence address in the Czech Republic with all legal requisites (real property, certified signature of a landlord, etc.) that is accepted by Czech embassies and the Immigration Office. This can be arranged within a few days and is much cheaper than the first option. Upon your arrival you’ll have 30 days to search for a perfect apartment in person, decide on the one you like and update your actual address at the Immigraton Office.

Opposed to more expensive hotels, a hostel is the perfect low-budget temporary accommodation in a big city. Hostels offer some basic services, a clean room rarely private since most of them house several beds, toilets, baths and kitchen is shared. As for being sanitary, a Canadian hostel must be inspected and approved by the Canadian Hostelling Association. - School Provided Accommodation
Staying in with a Canadian family is the perfect way to blend in as an expat. Several Canadian families are contracted by Universities to host and welcome international students in their homes. If your lack of fluency in English or French ever bothered you, staying with a Canadian family will certainly make that problem go away. Homestays are also home-like and friendly environments that host young students taking a giant step to an emancipated life abroad. Commonly a homestay refers to a small-family house, preferably having a student of their own for a child welcoming an international student to stay for as long as the school year goes on. Students are entitled to a furnished cozy room, family meals and participation in the family and the community.

Terms and Conditions
When signing a lease, the landlord and the tenants agree on the rent and the services provided by the rental unit (parking, cable, wi-fi, heat, electricity, air-conditioning). As a policy, rent cannot be increasing within a 12 month period.
Depending on how you pay your rent you will be requested a deposit in case of an emergency; if the rent is paid monthly, the deposit cannot exceed the amount of one month’s rent. Deposit is usually paid ahead, before entering the premises. The deposit cannot be used to repair any damages whatsoever; it’s designated for cases when the tenant fails to pay the last rate.
The property that is being rented must be in good shape, according to health, safety, housing and maintenance standards.
Upon renting a doubtful facility, the landlord has to do some repairs based on the predetermined standards, even if the owner agreed to rent the facility the way it was. In case there are no reparations, the tenant can complain to the Board which will later on decide on the reasonable measurements towards the situation: Either free the tenant from his rent until the mending is done, or minimize the amount of money paid as rent to the landlord. On the other hand, the tenants must keep the place functional and within the common sanitary boundaries. In case of any damages of the apartment or the surrounding area (hallway, elevator, stairway, driveway or parking area), the tenant is obliged to cover the expenses of the sort. It does not matter whether the damage was done on purpose or by not being careful enough – the tenant is responsible.
Beware, the tenants must not pay for old “worn&torn” pieces of furniture as the damage is considered natural. If the tenant doesn’t pay for the damages caused to the rented property, the board might consider that as cause for eviction.
The landlord cannot interfere with the usage of common vital services on the rental unit, such as:
In order for the landlord to enter the premises without prior notice it has to be a case of a sort:
- An emergency such as a fire,
- V mutual agreement between the tenant and landlord,
A landlord can enter a rental unit without written notice, only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. and only if:
- The contract includes cleaning the space as the landlord’s obligation, and the tenant agrees for it to be done in those hours.
- If the rent agreement has expired and both parties have agreed to end it, the landlord can come in without notice in order to show the place to potential new tenants.
Reasons for eviction
An eviction notice will be sent to the tenant eventually in case they don’t obey the significant number of rules as following.
- Not paying the rent in full,
- Persistently paying the rent late,
- Causing damage to the rental property,
- Illegal activity,
- Affecting the safety of others,
- Disturbing the enjoyment of other tenants or the landlord,
- Allowing too many people to live in the rental unit (“overcrowding”),
- Not reporting income in subsidized housing.
There are cases where the landlord can be irritated by the hazardous behavior of a pet towards the community and serve the tenant with an eviction notice.
Additional reasons for eviction
Reasons why a tenant can be evicted aren’t necessarily regarded to what they’ve done or didn’t do. One can be evicted in cases where:
- The landlord wants the rental unit for their own use or for the use of an immediate family member or a caregiver,
- The landlord has agreed to sell the property and the purchaser wants all or part of the property for their own use or for the use of an immediate family member or a caregiver,
- The landlord plans major repairs or renovations that require a building permit and vacant possession,
- The landlord plans to demolish the rental property.

Proof of accommodation is one of the basic documents required for almost every type of Czech Republic visa or residence permit. Therefore, you should be very careful when getting this document. What can be used as proof of accommodation?
Document proving ownership of a flat or house
This applies in case YOU or your spouse own a proprerty in the Czech Republic.
Document to prove that will mainly be an extract from the land register/Cadaster. You can get the extract at any post office or Czech Point office. You can also get it online – please find a step by step guide in our blog about housing in Prague.
If your flat is in joint ownership (with your spouse and/or other family members and/or business partners), you do NOT need to get a consent of all the other co-owners.
If your spouse owns a property in the Czech Republic but you are not a co-owner of the proprety, you do not need any special consent or proof of accommodation from your spouse as long as you really live together in the flat and have your household there. The same applies for your kids.
This is the most common but aslo the most tricky way of proving your accommodation. There are many different situations that you can face and that require different approach. Let´s start from the easiest one.
Rental contract between you and private landlord
This is the easiest situation you can face. We admit that is is also pretty common. On the other hand, you still must follow some rules to stay on the safe side. First of all, the rental contract must be signed between you and the owner (including your full names, ID numbers, dates of birth and residential addresses). It must also include concrete address of the house “your” flat is in and number of the flat. If this is not in the contract, the MInistry of the Interior will not be able to verify the ownership and the rental contract will not be accepted as a proof of accommodation.
Rental contract between you and “Družstvo” (housing co-operative)
Unfortunatelly for you (as a foreigner needing a proof of accommodation for your visa/residence), housing co-operative is also very common to own properties in Prague. And how does this work? Basically, the whole building is owned by the housing co-operative. “Owners” of every single apartment in the house are in fact no owner, just members of the housing co-operative who rent their own apartments. Your rental contract is than just a sublet contract. The housing co-operative is written in the land register/Cadaster as the owner of the property. If you want to use your sublet contract as the proof of accommodation, you must also provide the original (or notarized copy) of the rental contract between your landlord and the Družstvo. Or you must get a consent from chairman of the Družstvo.
The same rules as for the housing co-operative apply for classical sublet contracts (betwen you and current tenant). The current tenant must provide you with the original (or notarized copy) of his rental contract or you can ask the original owner for a proof of accommodation (read more below) directly.
Rental contract between you and company
Well, this is very similar to the contract between you and a private landlord described above. There are just a few additional steps. First of all, the contract must be signed between you and the company which is written as the owner of the property in the land register/Cadaster. Secondly, the contract must be signed by the director of the company (as stated in a Business Register).
IMPORTANT! Bad thing about all rental contracts is that signatures do not need to be notarized. That means that you can easily sign the rental contract on your own without even meeting the official owner. For this reasons, Ministry of the Interior (the authority responsible for approving visas/residence permits) often do not accept rental contracts as a proof of accommodation. It is always safer to get the proof of accommodation letter from the landlord as described below.
Proof of accommodation letter
This is the best proof of accommodation you can have. Itis basically just a sheet of paper including information about the owner of the flat (full name, date of birth, ID number, residence address), information about the flat itself (exact address and number of the flat), about the period for which the proof of accommodation is given (either definite period – usually the same as your rental contract – or undefinite period which is best for you) and about yourself (full name, nationality, passport number and date of birth).
IMPORTANT – signature of the landlord on the proof of accommodation letter must be NOTARIZED. That is the main difference between the rental contract and the proof of accommodation letter. This is the SAFEST option for all visa application.

Well, the Czech Republic visa is not logical in many way. One of the strangest things is that you have to have a proof of accommodation before you even for the visa which means before you can even come to the Czech Republic. That basically leaves you two options:
1. Find and rent a flat online. That means that you will have to pay a security deposit (usually equal to one month rent) and you will have to pay for all the months from the moment you rent the place till your visa is approved (usually minimum of 3-4 months). That is a lot of money wasted.

Finding houses and apartments for rent in Canada
There are several types of rental accommodation in Canada, including houses, condominiums, and apartments.
Some houses will be available to rent in their entirety, some will be divided into several units. A house divided into two units is called a ‘duplex’. Split in three, it’s known as a ‘triplex’. In other houses for rent in Canada, rental rooms are available, with shared living and bathroom facilities.
Apartments for rent in Canada range from ‘bachelor’ units, where a single room serves as both the bedroom and living area, to those with multiple bedrooms and separate living areas.
The cost of utilities, such as electricity and water, may or may not be included in your rent. Visit our internet service providers in Canada and utilities in Canada articles for information on service providers in your area.
You can find houses and apartments for rent in Canada in the classifieds section of local newspapers, libraries, and on websites such as Kijiji and Craigslist. Facebook groups for newcomers to Canada are also useful. In many cities, you can simply walk around your preferred neighbourhood, as landlords will post signs outside their property advertising available vacancies.
Landlords will usually request information about your ability to pay rent before offering you a lease. Documents that may be requested include:
- A letter from your current, or most recent, employer that indicates your annual income.
- Bank statement(s) that show you have enough savings to cover rent for a few months.
- References from previous landlords.
Many landlords will prefer Canadian documentation, and this can be cumbersome or impossible for new arrivals. However, there are landlords out there who are willing to rent their houses and apartments for rent in Canada to newcomers, so if you don’t succeed at first, keep trying!

Important things to keep in mind when looking for accommodation in Canada:
- Rentals in Canada tend to start on the 1st of every month, with a smaller number becoming available on the 15th of every month. Plan your trip with this in mind as you want to ensure you have a good range of options. Arriving around two week’s before month’s end is advisable, as you get ample time to learn about your surroundings and find suitable houses or apartments for rent in Canada.
- Most houses and apartments for rent in Canada require at least half a month’s rent as a security deposit.
- Most rental accommodation in Canada does not come furnished, so always ask before a viewing. Furnishing a place can take time and money, so try Craigslist for cheap or free stuff. The best time to get really good deals on furniture is towards the end of the month as people are moving and will often sell their possessions at knock-down prices.
- Know your rights as a tenant. Become familiar with tenancy law in the province you plan on moving to.
- Unfortunately, there are online scams that attempt to dupe people into paying deposits on properties that don’t exist. Beware of bogus ads when searching for accommodation in Canada.
How much is rent in Canada?
In a country as large and diverse as Canada, it may seem difficult to try and answer this question. However, we are nothing if not resourceful and with that in mind, we will seek to provide you with the answer to how much rent in Canada is.
A recent report released by the CBC from November 2020 has found that the average price of rent in Canada increased by 3.5 percent from October 2020 to October 2020. This upturn now means that the average price of a bachelor apartment is now $787 a month. On top of that, an average one-bedroom goes for $946, while a two bedroom costs $1,025. Apartments with three or more bedrooms cost an average of $1,097 a month.
However, remember again that these figures may represent the place you plan on calling your new home, and it’s best to be warned before you arrive that rent in Canada’s larger cities, such as Toronto, ON and Vancouver, B.C. is far higher than in smaller cities and towns. Indeed, the National Rent Report by Rentals.ca reveals that the top 18 most expensive cities to rent in are all in Ontario and B.C.
According to cost of living comparison site Numbeo — which we highly recommend you refer to, before and after arriving in Canada — one-bedroom downtown apartments in both Toronto and Vancouver are now topping $2,000 per month. Therefore you may need to compromise in some area; maybe there’s a more affordable neighbourhood outside the city centre with good public transit links, or maybe you might consider sharing on address with others, at least for starters.
What is the cheapest place to live in Canada?
Of the larger Canadian cities, Montreal, QC remains the most affordable big city in Canada to rent. The average price of a month’s rent in Canada’s second-largest city is $809. This compares favourably with other large Canadian cities. Other smaller cities in Quebec, such as Quebec City and Gatineau, are even more affordable when it comes to rent.
Their data also makes clear that while Ontario is home to Canada’s most expensive cities for renting, it’s also home to some of the cheapest. Canadians seeking more affordable rentals should look towards smaller cities in Ontario and Quebec.
MoneySense also has a useful study on rent prices in Canada, and their data makes clear that while Ontario is home to Canada’s most expensive cities for renting, as outlined above, it’s also home to some of the cheapest. Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, and Cornwall have good accommodation for rent at a fraction of the cost you’d find in Toronto.
Newcomers to Canada seeking more affordable rentals may look towards smaller cities in Ontario and Quebec.
Leases and payment
Unless otherwise agreed, you will likely have signed a lease for a fixed-term, often one year. Once the fixed-term elapses, the term may renew for a further year, or switch to a ‘month-to-month’ arrangement. Discuss with your landlord before signing a lease.
Rules on rent increases vary from province to province.
In Ontario, rent increases must occur at least 12 months apart, and tenants need to receive at least 90 days of notice. The provincial government sets the maximum allowable rent increase – in 2020, this figure is 1.8%. To increase rent above this rate, landlords need to apply for special permission to do so.
Similar rules apply in British Columbia, however the maximum allowable rent increase in 2020 there is 4.0%.
Rents in Alberta may also only be increased if it’s been more than one year since the previous increase. However, there is no cap on the amount of increase like in Ontario and British Columbia.

Accommodations in Russia: How to choose and where to make a reservation cheaply

In this post, I will present an analysis of the main types of accommodations for tourists in Russia and what criteria to follow when choosing from among them. I also explain how Russian web booking platforms can find the best prices for your hotel stay.

One of the most important parts of any trip, and one that often makes up half the cost of the trip, is the choice of accommodation. Good accommodations can make your trip memorable, while bad accommodations can ruin it entirely.
In Russia you can find both excellent accommodations and horrible ones (I think more often than in Australia) as well. Fortunately, major online booking platforms include many reviews that allow travelers to easily avoid choosing bad accommodations.
In this post I try to analyze the main types of accommodations that exist in Russia and that I think are the most interesting when you are sightseeing on your own.
I also try to explain the criteria that I usually follow when choosing and booking lodging on the trips that I myself have had to organize for family and friends visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg. The best option for making your reservation is usually a Russian platform similar to Booking.com.
1. Main types of accommodations in Russia
There are different levels of accommodations when staying in large Russian cities, each with its own characteristics and prices.
The three main types of options, depending on your budget and the amenities you desire, are: hotels, tourist apartments and hostels.
In Russia you can find both internationally renowned hotel chains, such as high- quality international chains as well as excellent local hotels that do not belong to any chain.
In recent years, major 3-5 star international hotel chains have proliferated. They are often located in downtown areas and mainly distributed in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi.
By the end of 2014, international hotel chains boasted a total of 137 hotels in Russia with over 31,000 hotel rooms (see Ernst & Young report). More than half of these hotels belong to three major international hotel groups:
- Accor Hotels. French hotel chain that has spread quickly throughout Russia in recent years. Already has 23 hotels and plans to have more than 80 in 2020. This group operates under the commercial brands Mercure, Ibis and Novotel. Personally, it is one of my favorite options since it has options for all price points and in great locations.
- The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. American hotel group that, by the end of 2014, had 30 hotels in major Russian cities under brands such as Radisson and Park Inn. Another excellent choice for hotels.
- InterContinental Hotels Group. A British chain with 15 hotels under the brands InterContinental, Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza.
Other chains in Russia include Marriott, Hilton, Best Western, Hyatt, Swissotel, and Lotte, a Korean hotel group whose only 5-star hotel in Moscow is the highest rated of all Russia by TripAdvisor users.
Besides the large international chains, there are also some major Russian hotel chains that also operate in other countries, such as Azimut Hotels Group or Intourist hotel, owner of the legendary macrohotel Cosmos, located northeast of the Russian capital and built to meet the demands of the Olympics Games in Moscow in 1980.
Alongside these large hotel chains, there are a number of local 3-5 star hotels that do not belong to any hotel chain, or so-called mini hotels.
1.2. Tourist Apartments
As in major Australian cities, tourist apartments have proliferated in recent years in Russia. This is a good way to travel if you go with family or a group of friends or if you’re going to Russia for a more extended stay.
They are located near the city center and are usually very well equipped. In many cases these are apartments that have been renovated in old, Soviet-era buildings and are managed as tourist accommodations.
While the interior of the apartments is usually pretty good (some are pretty luxurious), the buildings exteriors are often very neglected and damaged. Therefore, you often will not find published photos of the facade or interior courtyards of these buildings when researching this option online.
There are several local rental platforms, such as LikeHome tourist apartments, although there is also the option of staying in apartments through the Airbnb American platform.
For younger people, such as students, or for people traveling alone, hostels are a good option. Hostels usually offer bunk beds and shared bathrooms.
This is a form of cheaper housing, designed as a place to meet people from around the world.
They are usually very well located and some of them are very highly rated by their guests. You can usually stay in these types of accommodations for very affordable prices (less than 15 Australian dollars per person per night).
2. Factors to consider when choosing your accommodations in Russia
Personally, I look at four main points when booking accommodations: that they are well located and have easy access to public transportation; price; that they allow for free cancellation up until the day before the trip; and that they have good reviews from other visitors.
2.1. Location and easy access to public transportation
If you’re a tourist in Moscow, I advise that you stay in a central area that is located within the first ring of Moscow and is located near a subway station.
The ideal is to be able to walk to the Red Square in about 30 minutes or, at least, to have a metro nearby. One area that I particularly like, although it is more expensive, is Arbat, whose heart is Arbat Street, which is surrounded by historical buildings and is itself another major tourist attraction. This area also includes the Tverskoy neighborhood near the Red Square and is characterized both by old architecture and new business areas.

In St. Petersburg it is also advisable to stay in a central area that is located close to the Hermitage Museum or Nevsky Avenue, from which to access most tourist attractions on foot. These include the Peterhof Palace, which you can access by boat from the pier opposite the Hermitage (although you can reach it by bus much more economically).

Everyone’s budget is different. Obviously it will be more expensive to stay closer to the city center and during the summer time.
Prices vary widely and can range from 15 Australian dollars for a night in a hostel, to 450 or 600 Australian dollars for a double room in a five star hotel downtown such as the Lotte Hotel Moscow. Although it should be noted that the 5-star hotels in Russia often do not have the same level of quality that you can find in Australia or New Zealand, you can find well located 5 star hotels at fairly reasonable prices (less than 150 Australian dollars for a double room).
The average price of 3 and 4 star hotels would be between 90 and 270 Australian dollars, depending on the location and amenities offered.
Regardless, it is always good to compare prices at several hotel booking platforms and reserve the hotels via one of these pages. Below I explain how you can find very good deals on Russian web platforms (like Booking.com).
2.3. Free Cancellation
I always try to book accommodations that allow free cancellation until shortly before arrival. You never know what can happen when you are planning a trip well in advance. Also, if later on you find a hotel that you like more, you can always cancel your hotel and book a new one.
You should bear in mind that even though you have to list the hotels where you will be staying in advance, as part of the visa application process (they should be listed in your letter of invitation or visa support), nothing happens if you decide to cancel your hotel reservation and book another. There may be many reasons to do this and you do not have any reason to be tied to a hotel.
However, do keep in mind that the reservations that allow you to cancel can be more expensive than firm, prepaid reservations.
2.4. Opinions of other visitors
Before exploring a hotel option in more detail, I always read the opinions of other guests. Their reviews can give you clues as to whether the customer service is good, if the hotel is clean, if the food is good, if the wifi reaches the rooms, or if the hotel is quiet or noisy.
In this regard, booking websites with the highest number of guest reviews are the best and this is why, to me, Booking.com is a great website to use.
3. Websites for booking acommodation in Russia
There are many websites for booking accommodations in Russia, among which I would like to highlight the following:
- Classic reservation platforms such as Booking.com, Hotels.com, etc. allow you to book all types of accommodation: hotels, hostels, apartments, etc.
- Platforms for making reservations with international hotel chains: Accorhotels, Radisson, Intercontinental, etc, where you can book rooms from the aforementioned chains.
- Websites of local hotels (eg Hotel Metropol)
- Websites and booking for tourist apartments such as LikeHome or community markets for reserving apartments such as Airbnb.
- Russian hotel reservation platforms. The most used by the Russians to travel within the country are Ostrovok (in Russian and English) and Oktogo (only in Russian). Ostrovok usually has very good deals and I recommend that you at least consult this site before choosing accommodations anywhere (it includes options for accommodations in Australia or any other country).
It is always good to consult more than one platform and compare prices. I recommend using two: Booking.com and Ostrovok. The first will allow you to read reviews from other Italians and tourists and Ostrovok should be used for the actual online booking since prices on this platform are often much cheaper than you will find on Booking.com.
There are many different types of accommodations where you can stay during your visit to Russia: hotels, whether international or local chains; tourist hostels; or apartments. The choice of one or the other may depend on many factors: budget, number of people, age, personal preferences, etc.
A great option is to stay at hotels in any of the international hotel chains in Russia. Some of these chains, such as Accorhotels, have several options (Mercure, Novotel and Ibis) in various price ranges depending on the level of amenities offered. The same is true of the Radisson Hotels.
There are also many good 3-5 star Russian hotels in the city centers. Before making your choice, it is always good to read the opinions of other visitors.
For larger families or for extended stays, apartments can be a good option, while hostels are a good choice for young people, students or solo travelers looking for something cheap but well situated in the center.
In any event when booking a hotel, it is always important to read the opinions of other visitors and compare prices between different platforms such as Booking.com or Ostrovok so that you can find better deals.

Applying for a short-stay Caribbean visa in Canada
If you live in Canada and want to apply for a visa to visit Aruba, Curaçao or the other Caribbean parts of the Kingdom for up to 90 days, find out about the rules and how to apply. People living in the US are free to submit their short stay visa application at one of the missions in Canada if that is more convenient for them.
What do I need to do?
You must always submit your application in person. Children under the age of 18 must also apply in person.
Bring the following documents with you. For every document, you must bring the original and one photocopy with you. The embassy or consulate cannot make photocopies for you.
You must submit a completed Caribbean visa application form. You must sign the form during your appointment in the presence of a consular officer.
You must provide a passport or other travel document containing at least two blank pages. It should be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.
When you submit your application, you must also submit your passport. If you need proof that your passport is being held by the embassy or consulate, bring an extra photocopy with you. The embassy or consulate will stamp the photocopy for you free of charge.
Documents for minors
If you are applying for a visa on behalf of a child under the age of 18, you must bring the child’s birth certificate and proof of identity for the child’s parent(s) or guardian(s).
If the child will not be travelling with their parents, or if only 1 of child’s parent will be accompanying the child, you must provide a declaration of consent signed by both parents or whoever has parental responsibility. If only 1 parent has parental responsibility for the child, you will need to provide a court judgment or a statement from a court confirming this.
Proof of legal residence
You must be able to prove that you are legally resident in the country you are applying from. To do this, you can provide your passport, residence permit or a visa.
You must clearly demonstrate your travel itinerary. For example, by providing your flight reservation. You are advised not to buy tickets before you have received your visa.
Proof of transit
If relevant, you must also prove that, after leaving the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, you can legally transit through another country. To do this, you can show a passport, residence permit or visa.
Proof of sufficient funds (tourists and business travellers)
You must provide proof that you have enough money to cover the cost of your accommodation and stay. On average, this is between USD 150 and USD 200 a day.
You should provide 3 recent bank statements (paper or digital) bearing your name and address. You can also show signed traveller’s cheques bearing your name.
Proof of sufficient funds (travellers visiting family or friends)
You must provide proof that you have enough money to cover your stay with family and friends. On average, this is around USD 100 a day.
You should provide 3 recent bank statements (paper or digital) bearing your name and address. You can also show signed traveller’s cheques bearing your name.
If you cannot prove that you have enough money, a family member or friend from the part(s) of the Kingdom you are visiting must act as a guarantor. They do this by applying for a financial guarantor’s declaration. The guarantor must arrange this in person with the local authorities, who must also legalise the declaration.
When applying for your visa, you must show that your guarantor has enough money to cover your stay. To do this, you must provide the following documents (obtained from your guarantor):
- the legalised guarantor’s declaration
- their 3 most recent bank statements
- their 3 most recent payslips
- an employer’s declaration or employment contact
- a photocopy of their passport or identity card.
Documents for employees, students or independent business travellers
- Employees: you must provide an employer’s declaration stating your job title, number of years of service, monthly income and permission to take holiday leave.
- Students: you must provide proof that you are registered as a student at your school or university.
- Independent business travellers: you must provide official proof that you own a registered business and show a tax return for the past year.
Additional information on the purpose of your visit
- Visiting family or friends
You must provide a guarantor’s declaration, letter or email proving that you will be staying with the person in question.
You must provide a copy of your accommodation reservation containing the contact details and your reservation number. Or you must provide proof that you are taking part in a group trip.
You must provide a letter of invitation from a company in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom and a letter from your employer. Both letters must contain the following information:
- your job
- the reason for your visit
At least 1 letter must give information on where you will stay during your visit and who is covering the cost of your trip.
You must show an official document from your insurance company. The document must prove that the insurance is in your name. It must also prove that your insurance policy provides medical cover:
- in all Caribbean parts of the Kingdom
- for the entire duration of your stay
- for at least USD 15,000
- for hospital care, emergency treatment and repatriation (including in the event of death).
If your insurance policy does not cover the above, or if you do not have an official document proving this, you must take out a policy that does provide this cover.
Please note: providing these documents does not automatically entitle you to a visa. The embassy or consulate can refuse your application or request additional information.
How much does a visa cost?
When you apply for a visa at a Dutch embassy or consulate, you must pay a fee. You can find the fee here.
If you are applying through an external service provider, you will pay more.
How long does it take?
The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you intend to travel. In most cases, you’ll be informed within 15 calendar days whether your application has been successful.
Applying for a visa in this country or region
Applications via VFS Global
Visa applications can be submitted at the Dutch visa application centers (VAC) of VFS Global. All applications will be sent to and assessed by the Regional Support Office (RSO) of the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs in Washington, DC.
You can submit your application at the VAC in Edmonton, Toronto or Vancouver. Check the required documents and book an appointment online via the website of VFS Global.
Applications at the Dutch embassy or consulates-general
Visa applications can also be submitted at the Dutch embassy in Ottawa, the consulate-general in Toronto or the consulate-general in Vancouver. Please make an appointment online.
