Super Visa (submitted online) — refused

Parent and Grandparent Super Visa

  • If you know what kind of visa you need, get the forms and steps to:
Apply as a parent or grandparent
  • How long are you planning to stay in Canada?
Temporarily — more than 6 months
  • Do you have a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and is 18 years or older?
    Yes
  • How are you related to your family member?
    Child/grandchild

  1. Family Class – Other Relatives (parents and grandparents),
  2. Visitors/Tourists (over 6 months),
  3. Parent-Grandparent Super Visa.

You might need a medical exam to be allowed to enter Canada. If you do, a Canadian immigration officer will tell you and will send you instructions about what to do. A medical exam can add several weeks to the processing time of your application.

Canada Denying Lots of Super Visa Applications

In spring of this 2012, the Canadian Government put the family sponsorship of parents and grandparents on pause, but at the same time introduced the Super Visa – a 10 year, multiple entry visa that parents and grandparents could use to come to Canada for two years at a time. However, multiple media outlets are reporting that many of these Super Visa applications are being rejected.

Super Visa Applications Rejected

Many people in Canada had been waiting for years to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada, but a huge backlog meant it felt like nothing would ever get approved. Many were relieved to hear about the Super Visa.

Applicants must meet certain requirements as well as pay for their own health care to apply for a Super Visa.

Concerning Super Visa Factors

Once concerning factor is that there are reports of visa officers limiting people’s visits to six or nine months – despite the fact that Citizenship and Immigration Canada had said the visas are good for two years at a time. About 23 per cent of the Super Visa applications are being refused, compared to about 20 per cent of temporary resident permits.

The Toronto Star reported that one person was told their insufficient ties to their home country and the length of their visit to Canada were the reasons they were denied.

What is Canada Super Visa and Requirements?

Canada Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of permanent residents or Canadian citizens. The Parent and Grandparent Super Visa (Super Visa) is a temporary resident permit that allows parents and grandparents to stay for up to 2 years in Canada per visit. It is the most popular program to sponsor parents Canada.

What is the difference between multiple entry visitor visa and Super Visa?

Currently, most visitors to Canada may visit for up to six months when they first enter Canada. Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension, and pay a new fee. The key difference between regular multi-entry visitor visa Canada for parents and Super Visa is that the Super Visa allows an individual to stay for up to two years on each entry into Canada without obtaining an extension. A 10-year multiple entry visa would only have a status period for each entry of six months only.

It should be noted that holders of a Parent and Grandparent Super Visa have the rights and restrictions of a regular tourist visa holder, and as such cannot work or study while they are in Canada.

Shabnam, I wanted to personally thank you for all your hard work and dedication to me and my wife. Our new lives together are all thanks to you. Super Visas

A super visa is a multiple entry visitor visa specifically for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows holders to stay in Canada for up to two years at a time without needing to renew their status.

The super visa allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay temporarily in Canada. To stay permanently, parents and grandparents must be sponsored for permanent residence by their Canadian child or grandchild.

Super Visa vs Visitor Visa

Super visas are a type of Canadian visitor visa that are only available to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The biggest difference between a super visa and a visitor visa is the length of time you are allowed to stay in Canada. Normally, a visitor visa can be valid for a stay of up to 6 months. To prolong your stay in Canada you need to apply to extend your visa . With a super visa, you may be able to stay in Canada for up to two years at a time without needing to apply for an extension.

How to Apply for a Super Visa

You can apply for a super visa online, or by submitting a paper-based application. In either case, you must prove that you are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Your application needs to include a letter of invitation from your child or grandchild that includes plans for your care and information about the number of people living in their household in Canada. You will also be required to demonstrate that you have private health insurance from a Canadian insurance company valid for at least one year. Your child or grandchild will also be required to demonstrate that they have enough funds to support you during your visit by meeting the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) minimum for their family unit size.

Super Visa for Visa-Exempt Visitors

Depending on their country of citizenship, some foreign nationals do not require a visitor visa to visit Canada. These are referred to as visa-exempt visitors. Visa-exempt visitors are only allowed to remain in Canada for a period of up to six months without renewing their status. So, parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are visa-exempt may still want to apply for a super visa. This will allow them to remain in Canada for up to two years at a time, increasing the time they can spend with their loved ones in Canada.

Visa-exempt parents and grandparents who apply for a super visa have to follow the same application procedure detailed above. However, successful applicants will be issued a letter to present to the border services officer when they enter Canada, which authorizes their stay, instead of a visa. Visa-exempt visitors who travel to Canada by air are required to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA), even if they have successfully applied for a super visa.

Super Visa Extensions

Super visas allow holders to remain in Canada for up to two years. If you want to stay in Canada for longer than two years, you must apply to extend your stay. You should submit your extension application no later than 30 days before your current status expires. If your current visa expires while your extension application is still being processed, you may remain in Canada while waiting for a decision to be made. This is called implied status .

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

As an alternative to the super visa, which allows holders to stay in Canada temporarily, you may wish to pursue permanent immigration through the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program.

Since 2014, when the Program for Family Sponsorship has been reopened to accept 5000 applications, the Government of Canada makes continuous efforts to help reunite even more parents and grandparents with their families in Canada. The chart below demonstrates the gradual increase in number of applications accepted.

Within the framework of the Action Plan for Faster Family Reunification, in 2014 and 2015, the quota was set at 5000 applications per year, but in 2020 – 2020 the number of accepted applications increased to 10 000 per year.

August 2020 was a breakthrough when the cap had been raised to 17,000. The admission level is expected to be up to 21000, in 2020.

Similar to the application procedure for 2020-2020, applications for parent sponsorship are to be submitted online only. However, as of January 2020, the first submission of an online Interest to Sponsor form will be processed based on the order in which it is received by IRCC, that is “first come-first served”. The Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship eliminated the derogatory random selection of the sponsors to apply. During the second step, applicants will receive a relevant online notification and will have 60 days to submit the complete application package for further detailed consideration by immigration authorities. The intake process will continue until the 2020 cap of 20000 complete applications is reached.

Considering the substantial improvements to the parents and grandparents sponsorship process, the option to request permanent residence for the named family class has been mostly taken away from the Humanitarian and Compassionate Program (HCP).

As an alternative, in case of family reunification, Canada offers to apply for a Super Visa. This is a multiple entry visa for parents and/or grandparents valid for up to 10 years allowing them to stay in Canada for up to 2 years at a time, with a possibility to partially extend their stay while remaining in Canada.

Each of the two aforementioned options for reuniting with parents and grandparents living in other countries have specific application criteria and requirements. Both options impose serious financial obligations on the sponsor in Canada regarding the sponsored family members, and these requirements are increasing yearly.

Although other criteria are no less significant, the financial support is the main requirement in this immigration category.

*Note: The province of Quebec has its own list of requirements, which is not considered on this page.

If applying for parent and grandparent sponsorship in 2020, the sponsor in Canada must provide proof of income for 2015, 2020 and 2020. Super Visa applicants are required to provide a proof of income for a shorter period.

Individuals with the Temporary Residence status, namely : foreign workers, workers with temporarily contract and foreign students who have graduated from any educational institution in Canada are eligible to apply for Permanent Residence in Canada. In order to apply you must meet English or French language proficiency requirements, know the customs of Canada, and prove that you can contribute to the development of Canada’s economy. This type of immigration in Canada is called the Canadian Experience Class.

The candidate for the Canadian Experience Class program must:

  • have a continuous work experience under an official contract in Canada during last 2 years;
  • submit a diploma issued by a higher education institution or a college in Canada and at least 1 year continuous professional experience in Canada.

Canadian Experience Class program does not apply to individuals wishing to settle in the Province of Quebec.

In order to apply for the Canadian Experience Class program individuals need to submit their documents either while working under contract in Canada or within 1 year from the date of dismissal. If a candidate for the Canadian Experience Class immigration program is married or live with a common-law partner in Canada, the partner may also apply for Permanent Residence in Canada.

Immigration to Canada opens up exciting prospects and opportunities to create a better life for you and your children. Any individual has the opportunity to immigrate to Canada. The most important is to determine which type of immigration best suits you.
The new Immigration law of Canada cancels the possibility to independently choose the registration location of your immigration application.
Therefore, if previously you could choose the location to submit your documents to, as for example Tel Aviv, Moscow, Warsaw or embassy in another city of another country, now, the registration of the immigration application is possible only in the consular department of the embassy of applicant’s country of residence.
The consulate is checking your immigration set of documents to have:
⦁ correctly filled immigration forms;
⦁ a receipt for Processing Fee payment;
⦁ all necessary documents (photocopies of passports, certificates, etc.)

In most cases, all the documents for immigration are processed through the Canadian Embassy, but in some cases, you can apply for permanent residence after moving to Canada (refugee status, protection from deportation).
Application process for student visa and work permit has is peculiarities.

The application process for provincial nominees

How you will apply depends on which Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) stream you are applying to. You might need to apply using the paper-based process, or the online process through Express Entry.

In both cases, you must apply in two stages:

First, you must decide where you want to live in Canada and apply to that province or territory for a nomination. They will review your application based on:

their immigration needs,

if you really plan to live there, and,

for Express Entry only—if you meet the minimum criteria of at least one of the federal immigration programs covered by Express Entry.

Note: If you are creating an Express Entry profile, you will be asked which provinces and territories you are interested in. They may contact you and ask you to submit a PNP application so they can nominate you. If you already have a nomination, you must show this in your profile.

The criteria by province and territory vary and can change without notice. To be nominated, you must follow the instructions on their website and contact them directly.

After a province or territory nominates you, you must apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for permanent residence. CIC will assess your application based on Canadian immigration law.

If your nomination is through Express Entry, you must be invited to apply by CIC before you can submit an electronic application for permanent residence.

As part of the process, you will have to pass a medical exam and get a police check (certificate). All immigrants must have these checks, no matter where they plan to live in Canada.

Decide which process you will use

The application process is determined by the PNP stream that you are applying for. There is a paper based process and an electronic process.

In the paper-based process:

You apply to the province or territory for nomination under a non-Express Entry stream

You need to meet the eligibility requirements of the province that nominates you

Once you have been nominated, you submit a paper application for permanent residence to CIC

Application processing times are longer than through Express Entry

In the online Express Entry process, there are two ways to apply:

You contact the province or territory and apply for a nomination under an Express Entry stream

If the province or territory agrees to nominate you, you create an Express Entry profile (or update your profile if you already have one) and show you have been nominated

You create an Express Entry profile and show the provinces and territories you are interested in

If a province or territory sends you a “notification of interest” to your MyCIC account, you contact them directly

You apply to their Express Entry stream

You must meet the eligibility requirements of the province or territory, and

You must submit an Express Entry profile and show that you meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry, including being eligible for one of the immigration programs it covers

If you are invited to apply , you submit an electronic application to CIC

We expect to process most Express Entry applications in 6 months or less.

Note: We are updating the Express Entry system:

you can now earn additional points if you studied in Canada

a valid job offer now only needs to be for one year, and some job offers no longer need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

the amount of points you get for a job offer has changed

if you are invited to apply, you now have 90 days instead of 60.

Tens of thousands of visitors arrive in Canada daily. In order to make the Canada Border Service Agency’s (CBSA) work more effective, since March 2020, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has introduced a new system of prior entry authorization, known as eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for individuals wishing to visit or transit Canada by air.

Ιn general, the requirement of prior electronic registration applies to citizens of visa-exempt countries. The only exceptions are the U.S. citizens with valid passports.

Citizens of visa-required countries must submit required application documents to get the appropriate visa of one of the following categories:
⦁ Tourist Visa (visiting Canada as tourist or for short-term training)
⦁ Visitor Visa (visiting friends and relatives)
⦁ Super – Visa (visiting children)
⦁ Business Visa (visiting business partners)
⦁ Transit Visa (air – transit through Canada)

While preparing the visa application set, one have to consider specific features of each mentioned category. Nevertheless, while considering the possibility to issue a visa the immigration authorities are guided by the following main factors:

⦁ A valid travel document (passport)
⦁ Health status
⦁ Absence of criminal record
⦁ Sufficient funds to visit Canada
⦁ Intention of temporary stay in Canada and return to the country of residence
⦁ Real purpose of visiting Canada

It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide evidence of the aforesaid. In case of insufficient proves the visa application may be denied. In order to minimize the probability of failure and make the fullest possible application set, you can always appeal to our experts.

In the framework of the International Experience Canada (IEC), young individuals aged 18 – 35 may choose from up to three categories, that will allow them to travel and work in Canada during 1 year. The three categories are Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op. The requirements for each category differ by age, work term, and possibility of extension.
Basically, this program is available only to citizens of countries that signed a bilateral agreement with Canada on youth mobility, namely Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Spain, Ukraine. 32 countries overall. Citizens of other countries, such as Israel, Moldova, Russia, may participate to the program through seven recognized organizations, that usually offer paid trainings not only in Canada but also in the United States.
The application for IEC is reviews by civil services of Canada in two stages. Firstly, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based on its requirements, then by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada according to its requirements.
IEC is a reasonable way to further permanent residence application. In most cases, work permit under the IEC categories is issued for 12 months, that makes possible to gain necessary experience to apply for permanent residence permit under Canadian Experience Class. If a work permit is issued for less than 12 months, the time spent in Canada may be used to search for a potential employer who will be interested in offering you a long-term contract of employment and supporting your application for permanent residence in future through the Express Entry system. We remind you that according to Canadian Experience Class category, you must prove 1 year of continuous full-time skilled work experience in a Canadian company. Canadian Experience Class is not considering individuals with low-skilled occupations experience such as operational staff, drivers, equipment operators, and so on.
Canadian companies are enthusiastically considering employing young experts under IEC program. Because in case of mutual interest, the candidates who have already gained experience can stay in the company, taking advantage of other immigration programs, both provincial and federal.
Due to differences in immigration legislation between Canada and the United States, it is sometimes easier to obtain a visa to enter the US, especially visa of type J1, which is issued for students and young professionals training programs. During work, the participants receive a $ 1,000 USD scholarship, as well as free accommodation / meals. All other expenses are covered by the participants.
It is possible to take trainings in the following industries:
⦁ Agriculture (breeding of pedigree horses, cattle farms, wineries, etc.)
⦁ Hospitality
⦁ Economy and Commerce
⦁ Сomputer and other technologies
Individuals wishing to obtain a US visa for a training in one of the mentioned areas must match specific requirements. The main requirements are: age between 18 and 35, status of a student in the country of residence or proof of young specialist professional experience, the average level of language proficiency, which is determined during an interview on Skype with the interested party.

Who can apply for a Super visa

Applying for a Super Visa

Many families have been split apart as a result of children and grandchildren attempting to immigrate to Canada and start a new life. The government of Canada takes this into consideration and allows for a process called the super visa. The super visa is a visitor’s visa for parents and grandparents who wish to visit their children or grandchildren in Canada. This super visa allows for multiple persons to visit Canada for a period of 2 years at a time and with a status period of up to 10 years. This article will talk about who is eligible for a super visa, what to do if it is refused, super visa extensions, and financial requirements in order to allow for a parent/grandparent to obtain a super visa.

Eligibility required to apply for a super visa

  • An applicant can apply for a super visa if they meet the requirements for temporary residence in Canada as a visitor and provide the proper documentation. They require documents such as:proof of their relationship to the child or grandchild (who must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident)
  • proof of a medical examination and of being medically admissible into Canada
  • evidence that the child or grandchild is able to provide financial support through meeting the low income cut-off (LICO) minimum (a co-signer may be added to meet the LICO minimum)

Application process of a super visa

After your application is sent, it will be processed at the visa office to make sure it has been done correctly and that it contains all the necessary documents. A visa officer will decide if an interview is necessary. If an interview is required, you will be notified about the interview. If your application is refused, your passport and other documents will be returned. You will also receive a letter telling you why your application was refused. If you sent forged or fake, they will not be returned to you. If your application is approved, your passport and other documents will be returned to you with your super visa. Note that a valid temporary resident visa (TRV) and a valid travel document do not guarantee you entry into the country. You may not be allowed to enter if you arrive in Canada and a Canadian official finds that you are no longer admissible because there has been new information about you which has appeared (such as a forged document).

Medical exams

You may need a medical exam to be allowed entry into Canada. If you do, a Canadian immigration officer will let you know and will send you instructions on what to do. A medical exam can lengthen the processing time of your application.

Can you extend your super visa

It is possible to extend a super visa with the correct steps and documentation provided. Usually, a visitor’s stay with a super visa carries a duration of 2 years at a time. You can apply for an extension 30 days prior to the two year expiration date. An immigration officer will look at your appeal, and if they see that you needed an extension for certain circumstances or an emergency, you may be allowed an extension on top of the 2 year limit.
There are two ways you can apply:

Apply online:
Determine your eligibility and apply online.

1. Get the application package
The package includes the application guide and all the documents required you need to fill it out. Download the application package. The application form contains instructions. Read the instructions, and provide the required paperwork. If documents are missing, or found to be fake or forged, the application process will be delayed. The application processing fee is $75 CAD; this can be paid online through the Canadian government website. This information seems straightforward, but it may get confusing sometimes and some legal documents may be needed which you are not aware of. This is why seeking professional legal help is necessary, and this is why we are here to help! You can find information on Processing times and how long it will take to process your application online. If you submitted your application to an office outside of Canada, take note that the Call Centre does not have information about your application.

Financial Requirements for a super visa (LICO)

In order to host a parent or grandparent in Canada, you must meet certain financial requirements in order for the super visa to be accepted. LICO means “low income cut-off”. LICO is an income limit below which a family will likely use a larger portion of its income on the necessities of food, shelter and clothing than the average Canadian family. To determine whether a family is low income, the appropriate LICO (family size is taken into consideration) is compared to the income of the family’s economic group. If the economic group income is below the cut-off, all individuals in that family are considered to be in low income. Being considered low income can affect your chances of being able to obtain a super visa and hosting your loved ones in Canada. If you or someone you know is in this situation, it is recommended that you seek out professional legal help in order to be able to obtain your super visa. You may be classified as low income without knowing. We are here to help advise you and provide all your legal necessities and documentation in order for you to be able to bring your parents or grandparents into Canada without a hassle!

Visa Appointment Wait Times

Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Visa Wait Times

Nonimmigrant Visa Type Appointment Wait Time
Visitor Visa — days
Student/Exchange Visitor Visas — days
All Other Nonimmigrant Visas — days

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive an interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate can change weekly and is based on actual incoming workload and staffing. These are estimates only and do not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases: You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

Administrative Processing

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

Administrative Processing Information

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice: Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

About Wait Times

* Calendar days refers to every day of the week, including days when embassies are closed (such as weekends and holidays).

† Work days refers only to days when the embassy is open and does not include weekends and holidays.

‡ The All Other Nonimmigrant Visa wait time DOES NOT include K or V visa applications, which are processed similar to immigrant visas. A, G, and NATO applications are excluded from these wait times, as they are processed separately.
