Montreal, Canada

Montreal officially Montreal in both Canadian English and French, is the most populous city in Quebec and the 2nd-most populous municipality in Canada. Originally called Ville-Marie, or «City of Mary,» it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The city is on the Island of Montreal, which took its name from the same source as the city, and a few much smaller peripheral islands, the largest of which is Ile Bizard. It has a distinct four-season continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold snowy winters. — Wikipedia

Car Rental in Montreal: a metropolitan center of cultural and economic activity

The Island of Montreal has been a popular gathering place since long before Europeans arrived, and the city’s current downtown area is located on the 16 th -century Iroquois city of Hochelaga. Continuously growing throughout the following centuries, Montreal is now a metropolitan center of cultural and economic activity. The diverse neighborhoods of the city offer visitors a huge range of activities nestled between the intersections of some of Canada’s most major highways. Make the most of your visit by exploring the city and its surroundings thoroughly via rental car! Book your car today.

Humid Montreal witnesses four distinct seasons each year, with snowy cold winters and humid hot summers. Shoulder-season months such as April and October typically offer visitors the most comfortable weather. Be aware, however, of price hikes over Thanksgiving week, which takes place on the second Monday of October.

Montreal is the third-largest French-speaking city in the world, though as English and French are the two official languages of Canada, most Quebecois also speak English. First Nation Algonquin is also spoken throughout Quebec.

Montreal is located in the Eastern Time Zone, UTC-5.

The currency is the Canadian dollar, and most financial transactions take place via credit or debit card. Still, you may find cash convenient for transactions in Montreal’s phenomenal bakeries and cafes.

Automobile hire is available in over 40 locations throughout Montreal, including the Montreal Airport, the Décarie Highway, and downtown.

Montreal is surrounded by fascinating sights and cities well worth a visit. For a weekend trip, for instance, consider taking the 6-hour drive northeast to Tadoussac in the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River for some excellent whale-watching opportunities.

Visa Regulations

Citizens from a vast number of countries can enter Canada as a tourist visa-free for up to 6 months. You will need to fill out the eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) in advance of your arrival; the fee is $7. All other nationalities must apply for a visa at a Canadian Visa Office in advance of their departure.

Driving in Montreal

Montreal’s streets are densely packed. Though the grid system makes the city infrastructure largely easy to understand, most streets are one-way, and street parking is highly regulated 7 days a week. You will want a car to visit many sights outside of the city, however! Make the most of your travel budget by booking a car only for the days you plan to drive outside of Montreal’s populated neighborhoods.

  • Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road throughout Canada.

Speed Limits

  • In the city: between 30 and 50 km/h
  • On rural highways and expressways: 90 km/h
  • Montreal rush hours will seriously slow down your driving time, so avoid the roads between 6:30 and 9 am and 3:30 and 6 pm.

Other Regulations

  1. Parking in Montreal is both expensive and difficult to find, so try to book a hotel with complimentary off-street parking. Particularly if you are travelling in the winter, pay close attention to street signs (typically in French) indicating restrictions to street parking to allow for snow plows to adequately clear the streets.
  2. If your domestic driver’s license has been issued in English or French, it is sufficient for up to 90 days of driving throughout Canada; otherwise you will need an international driver’s permit as well.
  3. The only toll road in Quebec is the A-30 Expressway along the southern border of Montreal.
  4. In contrast to most cities in Canada, turning right on a red light is strictly prohibited in Montreal.
  5. The minimum fully licensed driving age in Quebec is 18 years old, though you will likely have to be 21 years old to rent a car, and drivers under the age of 25 will face extra fees.

Cheap Car Rental in Montreal

Automobile hire in Montreal typically starts at around $24 a day. Here are some of the best deals in Montreal:

  • Hyundai Accent or similar (economy class) – $24/day
  • Kia Rio or similar (compact class) — $25/day
  • Chevrolet Cruze or similar (intermediate class) — $26/day
  • Mitsubishi Galant or similar (standard class) — $38/day
  • Toyota Camry or similar (fullsize class) — $42/day

Note that prices vary depending on the availability of each specific car and the season in which you rent. For the most accurate offers, use the search bar above.

Tips for Renting a Car Inexpensively in Montreal

There is almost no seasonal variation in price for renting a car in Montreal. The best way to make sure you keep your rental prices down is to rent within six months of your planned arrival date. Particularly if you’re travelling in the off-season, you may find that the cheapest deals are available within days of your arrival, though you may run the risk of limited availability.

Discount Car and Truck Rental routinely has the cheapest car rental prices in many locations throughout Montreal. For more last-minute bookers, however, E-Z Rent-A-Car’s location at the Montreal Airport can often beat Discount’s price by at least $4. Ace Rent a Car’s airport location is also very inexpensive.

For most car rental companies around the world, the minimum age requirement is 25. Drivers aged between 21 and 24 might be subject to additional local fees and may not be allowed to book vehicles under the Premium, Specialty, SUV, Minivan, Van, Convertible, Utility and Luxury Vehicle categories. Additional drivers must be at least 25 years old.

Drivers License

Each driver must present a full, valid and original national driver’s license held for minimum of 2 years. If your license is not in a language used in your destination country, an International Driver’s Permit to accompany your national driver’s license is highly recommended.

International Credit Card

The renter must present a personal credit card, valid in the country of pick-up with enough funds to put a hold for a security deposit. Third-party credit cards will not be accepted. Isnit possible to visit Montreal attractions by car or we have to use the subway? Are there paid parking lots near these destinations? Do you think traffic allows us to do so? Thanks for your attention!

12 replies to this topic

I drive in Montreal a lot, you can drive around quite a while looking for parking, the street parking signs are hard to decipher and parking lots can be anywhere between $12 and $42 for anything over an hour. As others have mentioned, there is a lot of construction so a lot of detours and a lot of stopping. I drive because I have to but if you don’t have to and can walk, take the subway or ride a bike, it will be easier and lest nerve-racking.

Tbe metro and bus is very safe and popular with locals.

The Ultimate Cross-Canada Road Trip: Montreal to Vancouver

Driving from eastern Canada to the country’s west coast is a major undertaking, but a rewarding one that you will not forget.

Even Canadians are shocked by the diversity of the people and landscape when traversing the country. You’ll be moving through a range of cultures, languages and dialects, provinces, time zones, and topographies that are all compelling and Canadian. You likely will enjoy some places more than others, but the fact that they all comprise one nation is part of what makes the journey so appealing.

Especially if you’re coming from Europe, which is a patchwork of different countries easily accessible to each other, Canada’s expanse can be surprising.

The quickest way across Canada is actually heading south in Ontario and continuing through the northern United States. But that would hardly be the Ultimate Canadian Road Trip, now would it?

The stops included on this itinerary are mostly larger urban centers, assuming they will offer a wide variety of hotels with occupancy. If you have a trailer or RV, be sure to know where you can park it overnight. There are lots of campgrounds across Canada but reservations are recommended for the popular ones. In addition, Wal-Mart Canada allows one-night parking free of charge in its parking lots.

Don’t be overwhelmed by Canada’s size: Embrace it and tackle it head-on with the ultimate Canadian road trip, driving from Montreal, Quebec, west to Vancouver, British Columbia.

?The Basics

  • Distance covered: 2,860 miles (4,600 kilometers)
  • Hours driving: About 54 hours, an average of 7 to 8 hours behind the wheel each day
  • Nights: Seven (This number can quite easily be reduced to four or five if you are willing to drive 10 to 12 hours per day. Of course, an even better option is to add a couple of stops along the way and take even longer).
  • Time zones covered: 4 (Beginning in the Eastern time zone, you’ll move through Central, Mountain and end up in the Pacific time zone).
  • Currency used: All provinces in Canada use the Canadian dollar, though some, especially those close to the U.S. border, may accept American money.
  • Safety: Canada is generally a safe country, with strict gun laws and a crime rate much lower than in the U.S. That said, be sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it and your valuables in a safe place. 911 is the emergency number everywhere.
  • Speed limits:Highway speed is between 100 and 120 km/hour depending on your province.

Start in Montreal, Quebec

Steeped in history and infused with French culture, Montreal is one of Canada’s most popular destinations. Chances are you will want to spend at least a night or two here while you explore the unique culture and indulge in some of the delicious French cuisines. Old Montreal, especially, is a special chance to stroll cobblestone paths and peruse 17th-century architecture. ?

Don’t worry about your French here. Though many people here speak French, shopkeepers and restaurant and hotel staff pretty much all speak English.

The first leg of your journey from Montreal to Toronto is not a particularly scenic one if you take the quickest route, which is by the 401 highway. Nevertheless, there are several nice pit stops along the way, which include historic Kingston or Prince Edward County.

Newcomers to Montreal will find an extensive public transit system comprised of an underground Metro system and buses, 645 kilometres (400 miles) of dedicated bike paths, a high-quality bike-sharing system, and the option to own a car. Recent developments, however, are about to make an increasingly popular new option even more viable in Montreal: carsharing (French: covoiturage).

It is not always necessary to own a car, but sometimes it is useful to have the option of using one. A move, a shopping run, making your next appointment in good time, or getting from one Montreal neighbourhood to another are all good reasons to get behind the wheel. Fortunately, these occasions can be covered by simply picking up a car from one of the excellent providers for carsharing in Montreal.

Getting a car that suits your needs at the exact moment you need it is one of the advantages of living in a large city such as Montreal, by far Quebecs largest metropolitan area. No tax or insurance payments, no hundreds-of-dollars services, and no paying for an overpriced parking space in your building. Whichever Montreal carsharing option you choose, you will have the option of simply reserving a specific car online and renting it by the minute, hour, or day.

Why use carsharing in Montreal?

The new municipal government encourages carsharing in Montreal as an alternative to ownership, and it is expected that, starting in May, 2020, vehicles may be picked up and dropped off in more city areas, including large parts of downtown previously restricted to electric carsharing vehicles. It will also be possible to park the cars in spots normally reserved for residents in most neighbourhoods, making it much more convenient to get exactly where you want to go.

Carsharing is a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to car ownership. Perks include the ability to choose flexibly without the fixed costs usually tied to a car you can put that saved money into traveling more of Quebec and Canada! Providers in Montreal include gas, insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance in their fees. The application process always includes a drivers license check, and only drivers with a clean abstract may be granted a membership.
